Default overrated subs?

this is a two part question:

1) is JL audio THE best sub in the nation?

2) What else beside JL is good?

JL is definitely not the best sub in the world.... each sub or brand of sub is capable of something different.... all JL's will give you excellent SQ and pretty good SPL....Resonant Engineering excels in SPL as does TREO and Kicker... Alpine is a good intro sub and the type x's are on par with some of JL's products IMO.... it all depends on what you're looking for and how much $$ you're willing to spend...

I don't think posts like this help too much. You're better off listening to them because everyone prefers something different. If you aren't going to do any competing, most brands will give you what you are looking for I think........

JL Audio is a true engineering firm with many patents in it's portfolio. The subwoofer products are built by hand in Miramar, Fl. The W7 was in developement for 8 years before it shipped. Part of this development was creating DMA (Dynamic Motor Analysis) which allows the engineers to look at how the motors will work dynamically. Other manufatcures did not even know this was important (and don't have this capability). Once the W3v3 ships in April, the entire line will share the W7 genome (W1v2, W6v2 are already based on the W7).
JL Audio is a top ten manufacturer without authorizing internet sales or doing business with any "big box" retailers (Best Buy, Circuit City, Sears, etc).
I find it interseting that wherever I go, some trainer is comparing their "super woofer" to the W7.....Makes you wonder.

I knew this post was going to be about JL Audio just by the title.......and so did all the haters!

that's the setup i'm working on getting right now. i have a diamond audio sub-the things is awesome, it pumps-500w rms, and i love it. my problem with the quarterwave enclosure is that i need it to be 2in shorter than normal because i have the rear strut tower bar and it needs to have more airspace. they're working on it rightn now for me to figure out exactly how to get everything to work properly. the diamond sub also has a pretty deep mounting depth-5.7?" so the enclosure would come up a little higher.

JL's are great subs, usually if something is rated/ regarded highly, it is for a reason.

However, there are many other companies out there that produce really nice equipment. I have had many set-ups. I now have a 12" Image Dynamics IDMAX eating from a Fosgate (power) bd1000.1 (meaning it's getting 1000Watts RMS at 2ohms). The reason i chose one sub is to cut down on weight and trunk space. This subwoofer comes highly recommended, and if you do some research/ read some reviews, you will see that it is a WONDERFUL blend of SPL and SQL.

By the way- the reason people always compare their "super woofers" to the W7 is because it is a widely known subwoofer due to good marketing/manufacturing. When i got my IDMAX, it was between that and the W7. I am so glad I made the right decision. Last weekend we had a sound competition, and i put a W7 to shame (credit- he did have only half the power, lol). Still, i don't see the $350 (difference in price) advantage of a W7.

JL 12W7- not overrated, just overpriced.

i agree the w7's are overpriced, but you pay for what you want. am i right? you want a good name and good sound, you pay for it. just look at it this way. when someone see your setup, probably the 1st thing they'll look at is the brand of equipment you have. (i sure do) and then wonder how it sounds. people who know JL knows that there subs can hit. other subs, just whatever your preference is i guess.

On the note of the quarterwave design shown above:
I took it to a local shop and they laughed at me. They said with mounting depths and airspace like that, I would need a small crappy sub. I wanted to use a JlW6 12". So what they did was use the design but made it built up to get more depth and more airspace. It doesnt look as clean, but it hits real hard.

As far as whats better or overrated. Unless you are in some crazy competitions I think it comes down to preference. I like my JL. It hits good and lasts forever. I have had 3 jlw6 12's for about 4 years. And the one I have in is still good.

I am selling my others

If you're looking for awesome SQ and SPL and something a little different, go with the OZ Audio Matrix Elite 12" (or 10") sub. It's a lot like the IDMAX, but cheaper and DIFFERENT. I've had mine for about 6 months now and absolutely love it! You won't be let down!

IMO... but granted i haven't listen to some of the other brands listed...

go out and listen to the sub's you are interested in dont just ask random ?'s like is jl the best sub in the world that is a subjective matter and if you buy something just because someone said it was ok than you are a sheep who should fallow the rest of the sheep off the cliff.
