I really want to paint some of the dash accents. before i do i want to know if anyone has done it themselves and how hard of a project it was. ill post pics of what im talking about tomorrow or as soon as i get a chance.

 

Pretty much all of the silver you see here. the trim around the gauges. the trim around the boot of the shifter **** seems like it would just pop off but before i start messing with it i want to be sure.

also, what would be a good paint to use for this?

 

I Painted Mine Using An Airsol Can Plastic Paint From A Hobby Store. Then Wet-Sanded It And Clear Coated It.

KINGxOFxSKA I must say with the blue leds and all that looks da*n hot! did you do the leds yourself?

 

They're white leds, not blue. I did the guages and hvac myself and had SquallLHeart do the Pioneer headunit.

 

Nice. Where did you get your clear coat. I use dupli paint and clear. I want mine to be shinier.

Can you tell me exactly the name brand of your paint and clear?

i rushed and did this in a bit over an hour and i used no primer wich i dont think is a good idea but it was only for test purposes.

 

that looks terrible, you didn't mask the center properly you can see where it has been painted. If it's jsut for test purposes no biggie, if you're leaving it on there, redo immediately.

 

X'2...I see the "over-spray" really horrible dude!...I sand it...Redo it!...or something!...Good Try though!

 

^i dont know what to use to make the paint come out nice around the temp ****. its hard to get an axact circle around that part.
its my spare so i'll work on it later on but now i have to re-paint it all.

 

whoa i didn't know people were still going on this thread.

ok to clear up some questions:
- i sanded beforehand.
- i dont remember the brand of paint or clearcoat i used.... its been almost a year now
- i wetsanded after the paint dried
- i applied the clearcoat after wetsanding
- i took off the radio cover when i did mine

 

1) Take all pieces apart including cover, etc..

2) Dry sand everything with 600 grit..

3) Paint with whatever color spray paint (I usually use a higher quality rustoleum or even OEM toyota). Spray several even and light coats. After a few pieces and a few years you'll get a good wrist motion to spray heavier coats..

4) Let everything dry between coats and give it a few hours and spray clear coat.

5) Let everything dry at least 8-10 hours (you should leave it 24)

6) Wet sand with 1000 grit everything to remove the "orange peel" effect. Be careful not to sand through the paint though, because 1000 is pretty strong.

7) Compound everything (I use turtle wax in a circular tub, 2 inches high and 5 inches in diamter). Then use Turtle wax scratch remover (It really makes things shine). I usually compound two or three times and use scratch remover two or three times. Then just apply a coat of wax.
