Default short shifter question

What's the difference between the TRD short shifter and simply cutting the stock one by a couple inches? Mine is cut and re-threaded, so it's nice, but my buddy has an uninstalled short shifter he's looking to sell. Before I buy, I'm curious if I'd see any difference.

Thanks.

you would see a lot of difference, all you did was cut the height not the throw

cutting the stock one only changes the looks. the difference in the amount you shift comes from under the shift boot.
