Default Speaker Upgrade for the tC

Hey,

So I wanna change my speakers in my 06 tC... but I am unsure of what the specs are for the radio besides being 160watts.

I was looking at these speakers...

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-3oZa8es...1340&s=0&cc=01

and these

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-3oZa8es...KS60&s=0&cc=01

I want to avoid changing the radio but if I can get good sound by just replacing the speakers i'll do it.

any info on audio upgrades is much appreciated.

PS I am getting the bazooka tube for xmas...

the stock HU is 160watts MAX.....You'll be lucky to get 20watts RMS out of each channel.....

RMS watts is the amount of watts that is constantly pushed... the 40x4 reading is Max watts, meaning that it might push that hard during a musical peak.... Always look at the RMS, never the MAX..... If you're wanting to just upgrade a little bit, get a cheaper component set.....

Component sets consist of 2 midrange speakers, 2 tweeters, and 2 crossovers....the advantage to a component system is the ability to mount the tweeter seperate from the midrange to improve staging/imaging.... the other advantage to a component set is the crossover which cancels out certain frequencies going to each driver. This allows the midrange to only play the midrange of the music(vocals, guitar, drum toms, etc) and the tweeter to play the high notes(cymbals, synthesizers, etc.)

I suggest reading as much as you can find regarding stereos...here are a few sites to get you started

www.the12volt.com
www.carstereo.com

Don't hesitate to ask any question you have....think of this thread as your own personal information haven....

Yeah I know about the RMS... what I was wondering is what the RMS is on the upgraded ipod radio for the tC.... that way I can base my speaker or component set based on that.

does anyone know the stock RMS per channel? i know you said i'll be lucky if I get 20 but if there are figures out there that would be great.

Here is another question... if the HU puts out 20 watts x 4 channels and I upgrade one of the speakers that can handle 60 watts rms... what will that mean for the output at the speaker? wil it still be clear? will it be louder? weaker? only as loud as the stock speakers... right now I am not sure if I wanna change the HU.....

what would be nice is if I can get a HU with an Au port AND an iPod jack in the back so I can still utilize the center console jacks!!!! then i would do it in a heart beat.... any suggestions on HU's /DVD players/Navi's that have this???

I'm guessing the stock HU is around 15-20 x 4 RMS..I seriously doubt it's higher than that.

As far as putting better speakers on the stock system, they may or maynot sound as good as stock. I swapped my stock speakers out for my eDi 6500s within a week and they sounded betterish...but really nothing great. You just can't send enough clean power out of the HU to make a good component set shine.

Also, depending on how efficient the new speakers are, you may find yourself turning the HU up further, gaining all the wonderful distortion that comes with it.

As far as HU's, I think Alpine has the only iPod control system out right now.

Keep in mind, you could pick up an LOC and use that to power amps with the factory headunit. Keep all the functionality of factory but the better sound of aftermarket amps.

SO i can keep the head unit... get an amp, put whatever speakers I want along with my Scion bazooka and get some really good sound?

How does that connection work ? radio to amp to speakers?

i havent checked out those sites yet if they happen to be there.

cause if thats the case I can do that.... the amp will help keep the sounds clear too?

and whats an LOC??

thanks guys... ur helping.. ALOT!

If you click on "LOC" in mandos's post up there, it will link you to one....it's a Line Output Converter....it takes the speaker level signal(speaker wires from HU) and converts it into RCA's(so you can plug it into your amp)

So you are getting the Scion bazooka box that fits in the passenger side of the hatch? If so, don't be expecting "really good sound". Don't get me wrong, for the size of the box and the no hassle install, you can't go wrong on that part. But as for sound quality? It isn't the best. I have heard worse and some people wouldn't complain one bit. It mostly just lacks a low enough of a cross-over and lacks on the low end.

Great in comparison to other stock speakers maybe. But you'll probably find you want to go aftermarket for the speakers pretty soon.

Good choice on the HU though

They sound pretty good. Nice crisp mid and high. Strong low response, but that's not really what I was after, just a bonus. Got them for 99.99 from crutchfield.com and they had a buy one get one 50% off sale when I ordered. It was a toss up between these and the Infinity Reference 6.5"s. I eventually settled on these because the Infinity's had a more muddy midrange. Still, I'm sure you'd be happy with either. You also need a bracket to accomodate the 6.5" rear speaker; the stocker is a 5.25" I believe.

I do still have the stock radio. As I said, I'm planning on either the D1 or the Eclipse soon.

if you upgrade your stock speakers id suggest to get some MDF baffels! which are speacers to fit the 6.5" speaker from the 5.25" stock speaker and also gives more mounting depth. they look like this!

*this pic belongs to "ChefRaekwon" which he did an awsome job!*
you can contact him for some baffels or "Mandos" for some also!
No offense "Mandos" but these are pretty much the cleanest baffels ive seen!

*BTW- those are my future comps! Sometime within the next couple of months!!!*
