Default stock head , new speakers?

hey guys i got a jl 10" w6 on the stock head...sounds awesome...i was wondering if anyone had any luck with the stock and and swapping in some new 6.5s for the front and back...and if that had any effect at all..i did a search and read you have to amp them...any speakers out there sound great that don't need to be amped? and have similar loudness...if not louder.

leave the rears, there's no need to get new ones for the back. Only components will get louder since an amp is needed, anything less will not sound as great, although they will sound better than stock?

When I started my system I changed out all four speakers and still had the stock unit and it made a difference. The stock speakers like to distort if turned up too loud. New ones will not. If you leave the rears factory then they will sound distorted while the front will sound great. It would be unbalanced. Its best to change them all at once. What kind of speakers were you going to go with?

I don't really like 3way speakers personally.... I'd stick with components up front with an amp on them and nothing in the rear... I have stocks in the rear with them faded out quite a bit.... I don't even hear them over my subs and front components...

the speakers I have are Polk Momo 6.5" Components in front and rear. They sounded great with the stock deck....but if you want even louder sound than that upgrade the deck....even the smallest upgrade will show you a difference.

Did you use any particular set up for your 10" W6? I went to this place called kimballs that does proffessional car install to hook up the stuff. i had this stuff in my previous car which sounded amazing, but now sounds like crap in my tC. I had the following hooked up to the Stock head unit:

1. 2 channel jl amp
2. 10" jl w6 sub
3. focal tweets and mids(6.5")
4. Rockfordfosgate amp 4 channel.

I honestly dont under stand how they could have done such a terrible install where it sounds so crappy!!! my old car had this device hooked up to the stock deck, called a line driver, which boosted the voltage signal from the deck a few volts, which these guy at the place said it was not needed with the scion stock head unit. Maybe its because they did not use this?

And my set up is i have one amp under each seat. and the sub in a box strapped down in the trunk. and have left the rear speaker stock.

here is the list of problems that i have.

1. first off i heard a scion with stock speakers anda bazooka tube and it sounds better
2. the volume seems to change as i drive
3. i can only turn the volume up to 25 cause the bass gets too high even when set to -5
4. The sub used to have a beautiful nice clear clean punch sound to it, now it rumbles like a 15" sub.
5. and when playing with the balance it sounds like, the right side is louder than the left.

I want to take it back to the car instal guys and complain but they will probably blame it on the stock head unit. Is there anything particualar ways of install or set up that i should be insuring that they have performed? should i make them install that line driver that i used to have installed in my previous car? I honeslty do not want to purchase an after market deck because i have already paid for the ipod upgrade head unit from scion.

Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated!!!

Thanks.

^^ sounds like your gains need to be adjusted... since you don't have the line driver any more, your gains (which are input voltage sensitivity settings) need to be re-set according to the new voltage being supplied through the RCA's...

Thanks, but you mean just by adjusting the gains, all the quality i had before will come back? To adjust the gains all i do is play with the one *** on the 2 channel amp and the 2 **** on the 4 channel amp which is located beside the frequency **** right?,,, Do you recomend that i take my car back and force them so re- install my line driver?

turn all your gains all the way down...

turn HU volume up 85-90%

on the amp for your mids/highs, start turning up the gain untill you hear distortion, then back the gain back down a little bit... do this for all mids/highs... if there are 2 gain adjustments on the mid/high amp, then both need to be equal.

now turn the gain on your sub up to the level you like it at... you shouldn't really need the line driver as long as you have a line output converter converting your speaker wires into RCA wires (hi voltage to low voltage)

Thanks man, ill try this after work today!!! i hope it works.

but i still dont see it bringing back the crystal clarity to sound or getting rid of the problem where when the car is still, the music lowers and as soon as i hit the gas the volume increases.

Thanks for your detailed instructions!

that problem sounds like the Speed Volume Control... I don't know if the stock HU has it or not but if you look in the manual it should give you some clues...

yeah, we do have it. hit the audio button until you get to the last option, called ASL or something. it can be off, low, medium, or high, with high being the most speed sensitive.

lol, thats what that stupid adjustment was for!!! haha,,,, i always assume every option is best on high! so i had it set to high! lol,,,, well its makes a big difference!!! for now on that thing is staying at off!!!!

I tried adjust my speakers like stated above,,,, but i cant explain it something is missing in the sound that was there before,,,, im just gonna assume that mercedes has much better quality factory decks than the scion does (although the scion deck looks alot nicer cosmeticaly),,,,, think im gonna buy an alpine deck in a few weeks or so,,,, i really hope that improve the sound quality, and balance, and brings back the punch in my sub!!!,,,,

which alpine are you using? cause i love the way the 9857 looks but $350 is kinda steep, but so far it looks like if i want the ipod link and the steering controls to still work i goota buy that one. id settle for the 9856, but i dont think that one can be linked up to the steering controls in the tC, and that one goes for about $199,,, so id be saving $150,,, but the display screen doesnt look nearly as nice!!!
