stock head unit problems
i have a '05 tC with the factory pioneer sound system and head unit. since i bought the car a year or so ago ive noticed the head unit doing two things.
1) scratching my cds up and
2) refusing to eject cd's when the button is pressed.
anyone else ever have any problems like this? and if so, what fix do you recommend? cheers

Just use this excuse as a time to upgrade for better sound. The stock speakers sound pretty good when you do an after market head unit. I dont know if your a real audiophile but you could always look at getting a cheap radio with an ipod cable.

I've came to notice the same problem, now my cds dont eject, so what I do is take apart the center console, unplug the head unit, and plug it back in, and it takes care of the problem for the meantime.
Does any here that is a Toyota Technician know what the Error 4, is about? if so please let me know.

Yeah no one ever really knew what Error 4 was, I believe it was a malfunction in the cd drive transport (what loads the cd). But that's just my own thoughts. Either way it's that the headunit is dead/dying. Sorry but true, might be time for you to think about getting an aftermarket headunit
here's a link to what scionlife has on it

interesting...
You can probably have an excuse to get an aftermarket. Like all optical drives even in computers they are going to eventually die.
Maybe I'll recommend getting one with a DVD drive or ipod adapter. DVD drive will spin slower if you load up music into a DVD instead of a CD.

My '05 head unit is still working perfectly. Although it never scratched a CD, it did have error 4, and it did refuse to change/eject CD's.
If you have the time, you dis-assembly the head unit so that you can see/reach the sliding mechanisms and re-lube all these friction areas with a combination of white lube and Marvel Mystery oil. I came upon this working combination of grease/oil on my third tear-down, a make or break effort involving bending metal tabs to get some of the circuit boards out of the way. The suspension springs are tricky to reassemble so watch carefully when taking them apart.
Previous posts may be the best path (new unit) but being a technician all my life it was done more for the challenge. My guess is that the ERROR 4 is a motor overcurrent error which is why you can sometimes get it to work, but it does get progressively worse.

My stock is working good, but its a '10, not an '05 and the upgraded one. I still have my original 2010 basic stock if you're lookin' to buy. Has only about 4 months of use on it.

I have been dealing with this issue for a while now. It is time to upgrade. I did figure out that I can eject my cd's by pulling them out with tweezers, but it can easily ruin cd's. Mine were all burned mp3 cd's though.
My right front speaker is also blown, do I need to replce it and the tweeter also? I plan on upgrading my system, but I don't plan on adding a sub or an amp.
Any recommendations for speakers or headunits? I want to keep the door to close my stereo, and need bluetooth, usb, and ipod jack available. Do any stereos have a hard drive to add music to?
