Default Stock Sub questions...

Hey all,

New to the tC world. Haven't picked it up yet, but can't wait to get it. though selling the mr2 is gonna kill me.

Here's my question. I did test drive a tC with the stock bazooka sub. It was ok. but the one thing i hate is distortion.. and when you turned it up loud, yes you got bass, but it wasn't crisp. I'm pretty finicky about that. I don't want to be driving around "ghetto" style with my car rattling, because the sub isn't tuned.

I've tuned my amp in my car, and the sub sounds great. BUT are you able to do ANYthing with audio control on the stock sub??

I think it has a gain control on it, but I never messed with it nor do I know what it's for...I only saw it when I was installing my tail lights :p.

If you didn't tweak with the stereo when you test drove, you can switch the equalizer modes with the SSP button by holding it down.

In a tC with the SSP set to xA it sounds fantastic. Just depends on how loud you want it.

I can crank it up to 30 with the bass set between 2 and 4 (depending on the music) and it sounds good. Nice thump no rattle unless there's a ____ton of bass in the song. I guess it depends on the kind of music you listen to. I don't listen to rap or r&b, but I do have a lot of techno/industrial that has a good amount of bass in some of the tracks.

It's also based on perspective. Before I had the tC, my car's stereo was a single working passenger side speaker on a crappy radioshack tapedeck circa 1992. Compared to that, the tC is a veritable eargasm.

I'll have to check that out than at the dealership. For the amnt of money the stock sub is, i want to be DARN sure that i like it. Otherwise i'd rather just go out and get another aftermarket setup. Granted i do like that it still gives you your rear trunk space. But for not that much!!

And having one bad stereo before, i BET this sounds good. And for a stock stereo it actually is quite good.

Oh, and totally forgot. Can you get to that gain from the trunk, or do i ahve to be installing a new tail light assembly to get to it?

Oh i know. I have one in my MR2. However, for $450, thoug hi can discount it down to $360 something with my toyo discount, i wanted to see if it was worth the money or not. I'm already trying to gt prices on an aftermarket sub/amp setup.

I can only imagine that after having the sound i'm used to, going "stock" is REALLY going to suck.

more than likely.... I've found that majority of people who have ever had any type of aftermarket system in the past, won't be happy with the stock Scion sound...

i've never had aftermarket sound and i'm not happy with the stock sound. but, then again, i'm kind of an audiophile. i like music at atleast 320kb/s.

I got the OEM sub for $100 used and am satisfied with it for that price. Anything more than that and it's not worth it. It can sound OK but is never "great" or nearly as good as an aftermarket setup could be.

I ended up sealing the port on mine and I feel that made some improvement. But like others said, you can adjust the gain just by removing the cover (my cover is off permanantly since it rattled and vibrated) and I have mine set about 1/4 turn past the "recommended" dot from the factory.

How I sealed the enclosure:
