anyone here running their sound system through their stock head unit? i bought two 500watt subs, but my sister gave me her two 12's and amp for free so i used those instead. i got the two 12's and the amp wired up to my stock head unit. but the bass is ridiculous. i put the bass settings to -5 and even with the volume down to 10, the bass is waaay too much. i removed one sub, so now im only running one 12. but that's still pretty loud. i might swap them out for the two 10's instead, and if that's still too loud, ill go for just one 10.
my friend said i needed to get an equalizer, but i wanna avoid spending more money, so im just trying to see if people have run with the same problem.

Okay well to begin, the 12" compared to the 10" will not make any difference. the bigger the sub doesnt necessarily mean its gonna be louder. the loudest comes mainly out of power. However, it does affect what frequencies it can hit. For example the 12's will hit the low low bass notes unlike the 10s which just hits the higher/ some low bass notes. (I'm not an expert so dont quote me, thats just from personal experience as my 10s are way louder then some 12s I've seen)
but now to fix your problem, on your amp(s) there should be a gain ****, I would suggest turning that all the way down. This will control the subs volume because well frankly head units dont do all that much to control it. I personally have a bass remote that hooks up to my amp and is located next to my seat. Its a little **** that I turn to control the gain on my amp with ease (comes in handy when you roll by a cop or into a neighborhood where you dont want people to know you have subs).
Hope this helps.

For now all you can do is check your amp and lower the gain as it sounds like it was set way to high.
At the very least look into a Bass **** when you have subs. 20 bucks will buy you a good one. You'll be glad you did once you're able to adjust song to song. BTW put your other sub back in, it wasn't the problem.

hmmmm, i didnt see a "****" on the amp... but then again, i didnt really look at the amp that well. ill take a look tomorrow morning.
btw, as i said before, these subs and amp came off of my sister's bmw since she didnt use them, she just gave them to me. when i was having them removed from her car, i noticed this:

it was hidden in the little pocket thing, kinda like the one we have in our tC's by the shifter. i asked the worker there if that had anything to do with the subs. he said yeah, but i didnt need it, so i was like, w.e. is that the gain **** u guys are talking about? if so, can i just have it removed and put in my car? or should i just buy a new one?

Look harder it will be there, all amps have them. Let me know if you find it, if not i can find a picture of it for you.
and itd be easier to just buy one for $20 rather then going through the hassle of removing that, atleast in my opinion.

change the ssp on the head unit it could help some....u could even change what filter ur amp is using which is just a little switch on the amp itself...but best bet is ****** that **** that was in her car, an eq, or a new headunit....the crossovers and everything that come with a head unit will make the entire sound system sound a million times better not to mention u can control the bass a hell of a lot more than the oem headunit

oh yeah, i didnt even think about changing the ssp. i currently have it on "feel" right now cuz that was the one with the most bass with the stock sub. i should change it to something softer then. ill prolly get that gain **** people up there ^^ are talking about
the gain isnt so much as a ****...its usually flat recessed into the amp with a flat screw head look to it...there are prolly a few on ur amp but one will say gain its pretty much a "volume" **** for an amp...but a bass **** is super easy to install it usually looks like a phone cord and it just plugs right in and u run it through ur car to where ever you think it suits you best lol
o and if you go buy one make sure you tell them what kind of amp you have cuz those dont interchange to well with different brands of amps...i had one made by the same company as my amp just for a different model and it still didnt work

btw, i went to change the ssp from feel, to neutral. its sounds a lil bit better now. i tried the hear ssp, but it was still too much. so neutral ssp was the best choice to go with. im just curious as to what the bass **** can do for me.
just ask for a bass **** then tell them ur brand and model of ur amp...o ____ btw it may say imput level or something instead of gain i didnt think about that my bad lol

Look on the other side of your amp, on mine the fuses and stuff are on one side, and the gain **** is on the other next to the rca inputs i believe. But yeah its more of a hole that you stick a flat head scrwe driver in to change, every amp should have one.
But for the bass **** install on a scale of 1 to 10.. with 10 being the hardest.. a -2. Its so simple just plug it in, looks exactly like a phone cord and it just plugs in (providing your amp has a spot for it, which it should, if not you might need to get a **** that controls the level of rca that goes into your amp, either way very simple/cheap).
when you go to the store you could probably say either gain or bass ****. theyre pretty much the same thing.
heres a list of a ton of bass remotes (also the same thing)

Here's one that adjusts through the RCA outputs

but that mine be tricky since im presuming you have a line out converter hooked up to your rear speaker to convert the signal into rca, but still very possible if your amp doesnt have the input for a bass remote. Still a -1 on install.

and for this thing, does it pretty much do the same thing as the actual **** on the amp itself. the only thing it does is u can put it anywhere in the car right? and thats the only advantage? or is there something else to it?
