Default Sub upgrade questions

Alright so im thinking about upgrading my system, startinig with the subs. Currently they are 2 10" JL W3V3-4. Any advice on subs that might sound better but still fit my box? I'm really open to any suggestions, i'm just throwing around ideas at this point

i think your subs are fine (they are JL.. lol) if you wanna upgrade try elemental designs since they are quite popular on these forums. (www.elementaldesigns.com and then search for "forum" to get the ScionLife discounts).

if you havent already i say switch to an aftermarket deck

yeah, aftermarket deck....

only thing that'd be upgrade from the W3's in the Elemental Designs line-up would be the 11Ov.2's... take 2 of those and put about 1200 watts to them and they'll sing!!

are your JL's sealed or ported??? How much power do you have running them?? What kind of sound are you looking for?

since your running to subs on one mono amp, im guessing you are only pushing 200 into each of them (400 / 2). i could be wrong tho. my best guess would be to upgrade your amp, and try to push about 350 watts for each speaker. the charts on the JL site dont give you specific information on how much the exact optimal wattage rating is. but that would be my best guess on how to get more kick out of your system.

yea, ur subs are fine, u just need a better amp. try the jl slash series 500/1 bass amp
here are the specs for ur sub. as u can see it says that ur subs are 300 watts.

giving each sub another 50 watts will not make much difference. What exactly are you not happy with. If you describe what is lacking we may be more help to you

I think that more than anything i just want a change, its not that something is wrong/not working. Is there really anything our there that would sound different than what i have, in terms of SQ. I've heard my buddies 12" w3v2's and i cant tell a difference at all. Maybe im just crazy lol

well JLs are known to be really clean and consistant. so SQ wont change much from time to time. it can get a harder kick if you up your amp, maybe get a little bit more lowend with a bigger woofer, but JL is purty high in my book when it comes to quality. so maybe get a slash series amp?

anything jl is great but a A-series is the lower end model. the slash series is the top of the line. do you mean to tell me that there is no difference between a regular 3 series bmw and the high performance M3 version? trust me, same car on the outside but totally different internally. its the same with jl amps.

yea you will be able to keep all the wires. amp wiring is universal for all amps. i myself have a cheapie 1000 watt lanzar amp on my 10w6's. it sounds ok but it is underpowering my subs. if i were to have the 1000/1 slash series jl amp on these same subs,it will be twice as loud and clearer. my point being two amps with the same wattage will not have the same power. i will get the jl when the lanzar stops working, it'll give me time to save up the $1000 it will cost.

I was never happy with JL either. They sounded too sterile for me. I have been happy with Image Dynamics. I went from a single JL Audio 10w6v2 to a pair of Image Dynamics ID8v.3 subs and I really liked the ID subs better, they just sounded more musical if that makes sense. I then went from the ID 8" subs to a single Image Dynamics IDQ15 sealed and that is the best sounding sub I have ever heard. It drops low, is more musical and has better transient response than many 8" subs I have heard and only needs 300 watts to sound good, it is ways more efficient than the JL subs.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Im gonna go ahead and get the 500/1 JL amp. I'll let you know how it sounds. My focal speakers are powered with an A4300 amp, should i upgrade that or is it fine? The Focals are components up front and coaxials in back. Thanks again, much appreciated
