Default sunroof shade

ok so this weekend i spent like 24 hours redoing my head liner in electric blue micro sued and painting all the handles and hooks and dome lights black and it looks frickin' sic. But now the ugly tanish gray or what ever color you want to call it vinal stuff and plastic the u pull over the sun roof to block the sun. i want to take those out and replace them with black vinal and paint the handles black. so if any one knows how to take them out or could do a DIY that would be great. thx.

I'll be working on mine tomorrow.... if I figure it out, I'll let you know

Question bout painting the handles and hooks and whatnot... did you sand them at all before painting? Cuz I painted mine last night... I had put them all in a bag after so I wouldn't lose any, and they were all scratched up this morning.

Im wondering if you could use a Vinyl Dye possibly ? I have some leather dye and it will stain pretty much anything lol.. If I was close to re-doing my headliner I would give it a try but I dont want to mess anything up..

Just a suggestion though

I woke up to a rainy day so can't work on it today. I googled the vinyl dye and seems like that would be the way to go. Now if only I could find some locally..... I do plan on taking mine out completely, but we'll see how that works out.

Well by the time I finally found the tool to unscrew the metal bars holding the shade, it was too dark, and not having any interior lights didn't help any.... I'll try again in the morning before I go to work. Anybody know where I can get some of that vinyl dye?

I'm willing to bet that the leather dye I use for my leather working would work well on the shade. Im very tempted to try it out. I know if it gets on anything its pretty much dyed that color for good.

This is the stuff I use. You apply it with Wool Dobbers and at least on leather it creates a nice uniform coat.

So I just took my shade out. Extremely easy. I didn't have a camera so I couldn't take pics. Basically all you need is a screwdriver with a star bit and 10mm socket. You have to take out that plastic piece that runs along the side of the roof (just the rear piece) to get to the metal piece behind it that holds the shades in place. Once you unscrew everything, the long black metal bar that runs across the car should some down. The shade is attached to that. Once that is down, just move the plastic part on the shade towards the middle, and they just slide out easily.

Really wish I could've taken some pics cuz I'm absolutely horrible at explaining things... but once you start doing it, you'll see it. VERY simple. I can maybe take pics when I put them back in, just in reverse order if you guys need it. But I'm sure you could all figure it out.

My new idea is to just replace the shade completely with a different fabric. Not sure how that will work out, but I guess we'll find out.

I'm hoping to get it back in the car for thursday.... but I guess it all depends if I can get the shade done today or not. Obviously that needs to be finished before the headliner is put back in.... but if not, everything should be done for the last meet on the 29th.

Alright guys.... shade is done and everything is going back in the car today. If I can find the camera, I'll take some pics. Now if only the temperature was 30 degrees warmer so I wouldn't freeze....
