Default Swapping for 06+ OEM Steering Wheel

So, I've had an 05 forever now and finally started taking time to mess around w/ it.

Being an early adopter, I don't have the precious audio controls on my steering wheel. So i'd like to see if anyone know or has swapped the 05 out for an 06+?

What do you need to do to make this happen? i got an avh-p4100 on the way! what a better way to enjoy it w/ better controls =P

Steering wheel are easy and cheap for me to find so the hard part I think is the wiring right?

I think, you don't need to swap out the entire wheel, just the plastic part to the left of the wheel. (Unless it doesn't have them)

If it does, it should be the piece with the buttons, the wire harness from there to the back of the radio.

I have been meaning to look into this, I had a friend (who doesn't mod at all) ask me if I could do that to her car after seeing my car with the controls.

technically swapping the steering wheel is illegal on your car because you have to have an airbag by federal law. unless your going to use your car for show or track use only, you can get into alot of trouble for not having an airbag, or if you have to get your car inspected regularly in your state.

not saying don't do it, you can do whatever you want, but swapping a steering wheel isn't like swapping wheels or something.

I don't know the specifics, but I am assuming he would be swapping it for another OEM Scion tC steering wheel.

So is that illegal? and how could the tell? (There is always the chance of airbag failure I guess)

I am pretty sure that you need the PAC with any after market radio to make it work. I new HU will make your music sound so much better.

I need the PAC for mine, I just haven't gotten around to it.

So don't let it discourage you. If you are swapping steering wheels, this should be easier.

Don't bother trying to get parts from eBay. Just checked... only 06 steering wheel is like $150 with no airbag. Only 06 airbag is $300 something. WTF?

I think it is actually marked as Tech, but I didn't see it listed for the tC on the Tech page.

Yeah a remote would be easier. Or just a reach. IDK, I never really used my controls when I had them on my OEM radio. My old car didn't have them so I was used to reaching and still am. So that is where my opinion comes from.

I used to have an attachment for one of my Pioneer head units that went on the inside of the wheel, so it functions like steering wheel controls. Was fantastic to have. And was awful when I didn't have them anymore.

Sure, you can just reach, but the steering wheel controls can make things a bit safer as well - once you learn what is what. Then you don't really think about changing it or have to take a hand off the wheel or break your concentration too much. You just hit a button. That's how it was when I had them anyway.

Certainly not a necessity, but a very nice convenience.

^ yeah, I agree its not a necessity but it would be something that would be interesting to try

The parts are cheap w/o the airbag which i have yet to find out can be moved from the previous piece..

So what do you think guys.. can i move the airbag from the left piece to the right one?

it looks like i can unscrew it somehow and move over to an 06+
