soooo i've done everything with my gauges and HVAC other than the LCD on the HVAC and i want to know how to get it off? yes i have read every DIY and it says to use a desoldering braid... and i have one... but it's separate from the iron... kinda like a little snot sucker for babies.. just for solder. Is one that's connect to the iron a must have to be able to get up all the solder to take it off?
You can get a heated solder sucker that works pretty well at Radio Crack for about 10 bucks or so.
Solder braid is a braid of copper that is used to wick the solder up. It actually works very well if you use it right. I keep some around to clean up the bits of solder that the sucker does not pull out. With the braid, you lay the braid on the solder joint and lay the iron on top of the braid. The solder, once heated enough, will wick through the braid towards the heat.

Skip the braid IMO... I see way to many people overheat the screen from keeping heat on the pins for way to long with way to big of an iron... Go with the solder sucker! And use an appropriate iron... No need for a 45w with a 1/2" tip
With a decent quality solder sucker / iron combo, it should be no biggie to remove a screen without any damage in around 2 minutes or so.

nah, I think desoldering braids work best. you just need a sharp tip with a 30watt solder. just make sure you do little by little, and not the whole thing at once. it's tough to get the solder inside the holes, but i've managed to do it.

how much does the braid generally cost? i was hoping to save some money by doing this myself.. .but having to buy extra tools and stuff i don't think i'll be saving much in the end >.>
I have had packets of braid laying around for.... 8-9 years? If you really want to go that route... I can send you some. Just pay shipping.
I also offer the HVAC exchange program. I stock a large qty of hvac's right now. I can fully mod one, ship it Monday & you would have it Wednesday. Then send your stock unit back for credit. I offer the service as I have had way to many customers screw up the LCD & have to buy a junk yard unit. If you are handy & have some soldering experience, then you should be able to tackle it. If you have a doubt in your mind, then it would be a pleasure to knock it out for you.
