Hi, I plan on building my on stealth box at my old high school woodshop and was wondering what subs fit in the box... I'm pretty new to this audio stuff and don't have a clue to what brands are good. Just a week ago i learned to stay away from sony headunits lol... anywayys i'm going to have to enlist some help running wires thru my car or pick up a dummy's guide to understand more...

I did some research and understand that i should use 1/2" instead of 3/4" mdf since the subs aren't gonna be massive...

i also understand that the subs cannot be have more than 3.75 - 4.0 depth...

So far the only subs i can think of that are shallow enough are the

eD SQ10s and the Pioneer TS-SW2541D...


Can you guys help out this newbie??? ive tried searching but i can't seem to locate a list of shallow subs...

 

I think JL also makes one, but I'm not sure. Right now I'm quite happy with my SQ10.

 

Here ya go, check out the Pioneer TS-SW2541D, shallow-mount sub. It's only 3" deep, and the 0.5' airspace of a stealthbox is in the optimum volume range for it. The speaker uses a lot of new technology (such as no traditional spider in the suspension), and the price is nice too. Oh, I see you mentioned this already...something you don't like about it?

And here's another, which I know to be a great sub, the AVI-SL500. It's been around a long time (first shallow-mount sub I recall seeing, back in the early 90's), and I'm not sure of it's airspace requirements, but it's a high quality unit.

You might also want to check out Illusion Audio's website, as their shallow-mount subs are high quality and very popular, albeit a bit expensive for some folks.

 

actually i really like the pioneer unit.,and it;s only like $20 more than the sq10

its just i wanna know all my options before i choose one.

The sq10 sounds tempting too at $77 just wish it was back down to $55..

i will defintely check out all the other subs u guys mention.

That should get you started. I feel your best bang for the buck is going to be the soon-to-be-released JL drivers, and a close second would be the eD, because of it's very low price. There are some EXCELLENT SQ subs listed as well... :D

 

guys is it imperative to use MDF when building a stealth box? I once built a sub box out of more conventional wood and it worked fine :?

If it was okay, it would be a lot easier for me to build this at my dad's shop.

 

There are pros/cons to using regular woods and MDF.

You can use whatever you want...heck, my first box was a cardboard cheese box.

I believe Rocketgyrl stated in another thread that birch plywood is good to use...correct me soemone.

 

You've pretty much summed it up, Crabbyman. Obviously MDF has it's advantages: relatively low cost, easily shaped, readily available, etc. I did show in another thread how Birch-ply is superior to MDF, and I'd suggest that if you're able to use Birch in your install, go for it!

 

I loved the ED SQ10 subs, but also saw the Pioneer and drooled over those. Good ol' eBay took the price per down to about 75 bucks shipped. Based on the box I make and shown here:

I decided to make a new one, a bit larger to accomodate the required airspace and it's going to fit TWO Pioneer slimlines. I'll post pics and my feelings of it after. Really, the ED SQ10 is awesome. The work to make this new box is really unnecessary, but I wanted to see how it sounds. I'll let you know if it's justified. The sub is actually larger around than the SQ10, though, so if you buy ED's stealth box and want to fit the Pioneer in it, you will need to have a router to enlarge the hole. Just an FYI! Yeah, they are both 10" subs, but the ED measures about 10 1/4" in diameter, while the Pioneer is about 11". Since I made my boxes from scratch, it's not a problem, but with a box already made, it might be tougher to cut the hole larger without the proper tools.

 

wow awesome info lowdown^^ so what im getting from that is that i can just buy an ED stealth box, expand the whole a bit, and it will accomodate the pioneers. Now i just need to figure out how to by the dual stealth box the website confuses me. :D

I don't believe ED sells a dual stealth box unless you have an xB, all the ones that you see on this website are custom made. Correct me if I'm wrong tho

 

for the tC, no, you are correct, Mark. Since they work on in wood, there's no way for them to fabricate a dual box for that small area in the tC. Fiberglass is the only way to go because of the crazy shape.

 

call up ED and inquire about that first, though. Physically, I'm saying you could enlarge the hole. But ask what the internal airspace is for their box. It needs to be at least .35 CF at a minimum for one Pioneer. The ED SQ10 uses .3 CF minimum.

 

I seem to recall Chris/mandos posting that the stealthbox has the required .35' volume, and there have also been a couple peeps here that put the Pioneer in eD's box, who stated they were pleased with the performance.

 

so lowdownthrowdown, you ever finish the dual pioneer shallow 10's in a stealth box project? deffffffffffinately interested if it worked out.

 

i think the best bet is the sq10's. cheap, good quality (as far as people say), and well, the box is made for it.
