why hide it when you're in the car?

I do the same thing. It's not "hiding it when in the car", but simply convenience. You don't have to open the cover to turn it on, change the station, source or volume, so usually the only time I open it is to turn it off, since that can't be done using the steering wheel controls.

I read somewhere that holding the Mode button turns the HU off but I haven't tested it yet.

I close mine all the time. I have a nav and am able to get it closed. I want to protect that $1,800 piece of equipment, even though it is a lot less now. The less advertising you do the better.

exactly why i cover my HU. it didn't cost nearly that much but i still want to hide it.

About the mode button... In mine, if you hold the mode button, it turns off my nav... but mine's stock, so who knows about aftermarket.

I have it closed and a pic of the rims I want on the door so it reminds me to not stop at 7-11 and get an energy drink and some taquitos or whatever else I feel like getting that I don't need.

i told myself i'd close it everytime i got out of the car....yeah that lasted about 2 weeks. i think its been in the open position for well over a year now

If i were a thief and i looked into a tC and saw it closed, i would automatically assume it is closed because they have something to hide. That's just me though.
