Sunroof or wind deflector?

The "recall" (btw, it's only a service campaign, not a recall) was only for the wind deflector. The sunroof itself should be normally fine unless it's hit with something. How far was it open? There are two positions when it's open... there's the 3/4 and full. At any sort of high speed (not sure if 45 is enough), you should only keep it at 3/4 open.

As for rental - doubt it... maybe your insurnace company would. Also, I've heard of some dealers not covering them under warranty if they can find that something hit it.

Could be heat/humidity related... don't know.

Shouldn't be. It happens rarely, but there have been a couple similar occurances before. I remember one post about someone who ran into a convenience store or something and came out and watched the sunroof shatter.

Is it usually pretty hot and humid there? I think they were in AZ or NM or something.

its glass....it breaks randomly....you probably just got some bad glass...maybe a dip in the road or something caused your car to flex and it just bent it the wrong way.

well, after a few hours, the most logical thing i can come up with is this..........

from about 12:00 to 3:45, the heat index was probably in the low 90's, then it started raining pretty hard for about 20-30 mins, then by 5:30, the heat index was back up in the low 90's. Considering it shattered at around 5:10, i really think its b/c of the change in temperature. The roof is usually the hottest part of the car esp considering its glass and dark. Guess i get to see what the techs at toyota have to say 2morrow............................

....to be continued

get the dealer to look at it as soon as you can, sorry to hear that!

As far as the service campaign, it does nothing to prevent breakage, only keeps the glass from falling in your face if the deflector does break

well i live in South Texas and the humidity freaking sucks! The temp could be 90 but it feels like 105! Seriously sucks, any 1 in TX will know what im talking about! Im kinda scared of that happening cause i usually drive with the sunroof closed but the shades open? I think im gonna close them now so i wont get any glass if it breaks (knocking on wood). i work at a bank and a girl there that drives an AP tC had hers break. i think scion needs to put a recall on this too!

Default That sucks.

Are you sure it wasn't road debris a car's tire kicked in front of yours? Sometimes that stuff happens if the roads are dirty or construction just occured. Anyway, the person who recommend to keep your roof at 3/4 is right. I never keep mine at full when I'm on the highway just b/c i don't like the way the wind flaps it. I usually keep the roof closed or leave it slightly opened on the highway.

That's suck man, that freakin glass roof is not cheap to replace. I am worry about mine everyday since I got the tC.

If u do a search, you should fine few people have shattered their roof. I am sure any dealer will say the roof was hitted by road debris and have you to pay for the repair.....

the closest car to me was probably about 50 yards infront of me in a turn, theres no way its from a vehicle unless it was shot high up into the air. How can the dealer say its road debri if it shattered. Well technically, all sides of the roof about 1" towards the center are in pieces, and theres a diamond size whole in the middle, along with cracks everywhere, if for some reason something fell out the sky and hit it, it shouldnt have shattered the whole thing right?

Does anyone remember in the movie "Fight Club" where the main character is talking about the recall formula being something like recall cost versus the cost of lawsuits?

It could have been ressonance frequency, but some freak accident your cars vibration might have matched it....and poof...

from stories from other people and personal friends, the temperature stresses that the glass went through is probably the culprit.

sorry to hear man. hope everything gets fixed asap

I'm always so scared that is going to happen to me, especially when it hails.
