=\ my car is eating way to much gas
but seriously it is. i only have a CAI and its eating up way tooooo much for my budget. i filled in with 10 dollars yesterday and its like 4.XXX gallons and its all ready to empty. i know you guys are for sure going to say well youre 17 and you probably drive like a maniac. but i dont. i tried to save gas but it doesnt seem like anything is helping.. anyone know the what the possible problem could be?
So you paid $4.. a gallon and put $10 worth in? So you got all of maybe 2.5 gallons at most.. How many miles did you travel in the time you put the $10 in and now? And where the heck is gas still that exspensive?
You need to fill up your tank, reset the trip and drive till you are low on gas. Then fill up your tank again, all the way, and divide how many miles you drove by how many gallons it took to fill up and you have your mpg.
hahah yeah i put in 4.xxx gallons which was worth 10 dollars. i traveled less than 100 miles in one night. im not trying to figure out how much my mpg is cause i know FOR SURE its less than 20 cause ive done it so many times and im sick of seeing it under 20mpg.
whats more, you typically get better mpg on first half of your gas tank than the latter half. Other than that, sounds pretty legit.
Then again, how much is "less than 100"? and how much gas did you have when you left the pump? like 1/4 tank?

It is not possible unless you drive like grandma when the tank is full and Dale Jr. wheen is below half. Msot fuel guages are not very accurate and generally you drive more miles before it reads 1/2 than from 1/2 to empty.
If the original poster is getting less than 20mpg then either you need to back off the gas or get the car checked. I would think it would be close to impossible to get thath kind of mileage from a properly tuned engine unless you spend alot of time in stopped traffic.

Check your tire pressure - as the air temp drops so does the tire pressure and that can cost you more MPG than you realize. Keep track of where you bought your gas too as that can affect your mileage - some pumps may be short pumping you also (pumping less than they say) Better yet some may pump more than they say believe it or not pumping it slowly can get you more gas than the pump says. Lastly what speed are you driving and is it an automatic, last oil change?
1. i dont use a/c cuase its getting cold in chicago already.. and what do you mean by letting the rpms decrease or increase dramatically?
2. not 100 for 4 gallons.. less than 100. a lot less. i believe i had around like high 50's to low 60's so thats around 14 or 15 mpg. which is insane..
3. after i filled up i had around 1/2 a tank and now im pretty much on my light.. for the 3rd time this week. =/
4. i dont spend that much time in traffic.. so i dont know whats up..

First... no offense, but if 100/4 is tough to figure.. that may be your first more pertinent concern.. it is 25mpg. If you were even partially in the city, that is right where you should be. People just dont read the info on the car when they buy it apparently. 22 city, 31 hwy. Sounds like your car is performing perfectly. You cant complain for getting the mileage they told you it would.
And next, the reason you seem to get better mileage for half the tank is that 99% of the gauges in cars are not linear due to tank shape and placement. This one is pretty linear though. All you have to do is look at it. There is less graduation area below half a tank. R means reserve, which means you still have gas in the tank, from R to 1/2 is not 1/2 a tank of gas. From empty to 1/2 is.

And first you say less than 100, then it is 50 or 60. So you really dont have any idea what your mileage was. Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive till its time to fill and fill completely again. Then figure your mpg. And that wont be totally accurate. You need to average over a few tanks to get a better idea. A car will not get it s rated mpg every time.
Sorry to be critical, but you have not done much to really figure out what kind of economy you are getting. You dont know how far you have driven, or really exactly how much gas you used. A complete fill, drive and complete fill is the only somewhat accurate way to tell this.
