~~Dealership Rip Off Please Read~~
About a week ago my AC stopped blowing cold Air (05 Scion 69,000). It would turn on every once in awhile. I brought it into the local Toyota Shop (Toyota of Tampa Bay). After 95 dollar diagnostic fee and 45 dollar dye test. They finally told me their is a leak in the dryer and the clutch is bad. But they still arent sure because the compressor isnt powered so that could need replacing also.
I do not understand this if the clutch is bad how would the AC still turn on? I thought maybe a electrical problem powering the clutch. Anyways... They quoted me 1100 and somethign dollars for a new clutch and new dryer.
Direct From the Dealership Prices:
$395 for Clutch
$95 for Dryer
$1050 for Compressor
Keep in mind thats just the prices of the Parts not labor
I was able to find the clutch and compressor online for 535 (OEM part) on yeah and the dryer for 23 dollars.
Please let me know what you think. Any advice would be greatly appreicated.

sounds about right. at least you dont have a prius with a blown headlight, 250 for the bulb and 370 for the computer to power it, plus a couple hours for labor, which is usually at 80-100 per hour so your lookin at 780-820 to fix ONE headlight bulb on a prius....

Well, one reason why the clutch is not engaging the compressor is because your AC system pressure switch is probably reading below operating threshold. The ECU shuts down the system when it's under that condition. The cause can be due to low freon levels in the system. The leak needs to be taken care of first before condemning the clutch operation. The only thing I can suggests is getting a pint of r134 and charge the system on the low side port to see if the improved freon levels indirectly engage the compressor clutch via the AC pressure switch.

Installing ac compressor is cake do not pay the dealership for it, Please im begging you - its two lines that unbolt from the compressor, remove gen/v belt, compressor unbolts from motor with 4 12mm bolts, disconnect wire from compressor/clutch assy - reverse to replace with new compressor. If you pay a dealer to do this your nuts - under warranty i can understand - but with paying out of pocket NO WAY. Also - im with guy above - check for leaks in the system first. That could def be the true source of your problem - k im out

Extended warranty bro is all I can tell you. For $1100 worth of work, the warranty practically pays for itself after the first dealership visit, hope its your last, and if not you still have the warranty.
If that's not a viable option for you; then you have already located the parts so either do the labor yourself, I mean we have the tech manual here on SL and get a buddy or two to help if you're not too comfortable just make sure they're knowledgeable buddies and save the beer for when the job is done.
You can also get the parts and have the dealer quote you on the labor ---> RIPOFF
Or find a local shop that may specialize in AC components or some other shop and let them quote you on the labor.
One thing is for certain if you don't go the extended warranty route; buy the OEM parts online and save $$$

i would never buy stuff from the dealership ill search and buy my own stuff then maybe have them install it..but there making a big profit...there excuse is ita OEM so its the good stuff which is bull just do the research before getting anything done to the car cause later on youll be diappointed

If you can, take it to another Toyota dealer. If they want to charge you 1100 in parts alone you'll be probably looking at $1600+ with labor. Thats outragous. Definately get a second opinion.
