Default 07 MY redline/ignition cut

Hello all,
A while back I read that the 07 MY tC got 161HP @6000 RPM compared to 5700 on the 05-06 MY. I didnt quite believe it until I recently went over to scion.com and checked out the current stats they have on the tC..... and behold 6000 RPM rated peak power. I also read that redline was bumped to 6500. Now on the tach, that obviously isnt true, but I had to try for myself b/c I'm used to driving Honda's and tend to have higher redlines. Of course I could have hit limiter and potentially damaged the valvetrain.............. but I actually got to 6500RPM with no issue. Has anyone else tried? On dyno charts it seems that 05-06 MY has a limiter set to around 6300 PRM?

Yes, the 07 has a higher limit, thus the higher hp numbers. HP is a product of rpm and tq. But you wont ever notice the 1 hp right up there with an intake :D

eh, I knew 1 HP is absolutely no different.... I just put it in to show HP figures.
As crazy as this may sound to certain folks, but I really enjoy the extra revs and I really dont feel the "lose momentum past 5000RPM" feeling. But I dont spend much time passed 3000RPM anyway aside from expressway which I cant do anything about.

Why do you let go of the gas? You know it'll just shift to the next gear right?

IF anything, the benefit of the higher redline is that if you shift higher, you end up on a higher point in the power band after the shift. Not a ton of difference in this application, but a difference none the less.

yuup! I dont expect any difference in acceleration times from the previous MY tC's..... but always fun to have more revs.
If Toyota had kept peak power at 5700RPM with the new redline, acceleration probably wont be as quick.

Did they level out the torque a bit more on the 07?

I don't think I ever got anywhere near 6k RPMs in my A/T.

hmm.... maybe, but I guess dyno charts would be needed or have someone drive 05-06 and 07 back to back

I really find it pointless to have to rev to 10,000 rpm just to get 160hp when I can get it in 5,000.

Rice boys often jerk off to the notion of reving their Civics to 7,500rpm just to get their whopping 120hp. Wow /sarcasm.

I like engines with a wider powerband, instead of something reving to death and you're only given a margin of 1,000rpm to get power out of the engine. That's why I didn't like the Celica GTS. The higher you rev a motor, the more that can go wrong with it. The GTS has it shares of problems.

it is pointless, i used to own a thunderbird SC that made 315 lb/tq at 2,600 rpms... bone stock.. now that was a fun car

sounds like they revised the cam profile and raised the redline a tad to compensate to give it a longer powerband which makes the world turn allot more than the 1hp figure tells.

I think what's important here is that the 07 might have 160 sustained HP from 5700 RPM all the way to 6500. While 05-06 will have that same power cut off at 6250. Same engine wider power band. In fact, I think in the 05-06 the torque sharply drops off at higher RPMs, which causes the HP to start decreasing after 5700 RPM.

I wonder how a SC 07 would do.

ricer mentality is 1 thing. Fully understanding why Honda strives to get their VTEC to work well is another.
Sure, on everyday driving having the big torque down low in the rev range is great, but it kind of sucks when a car runs out of air too early in the rev range. IMO, having some revs is fun.

Personally I like having the lower rev band. I used to own a 2000 civic si, and a 1997 type r, and both had high rev bands, only issue, the civic for instance, was only pumping out 117 tq max, and it didn't get moving very well unless you were in high revs. Just like the GTS, only 125 tq but at high revs. I like the rev band more compact, because it allows CONSTANT increase in movement, and the switch from torque to horsepower occurs with less time. Just my opinion.

^^ unfortunately, both your Hondas were probably faster than the tC, and it's not due to torque. But it may be a bit unfair to compare these cars. Prior to getting the tC, I was concerned about all the reviews I read about how the car loses momentum after 5K RPM. Looking at some dyno charts from stock tC's, that seemed to be true.
