Default 07 TC Engine Block Needs Replacement at 47,000 miles

I brought my 07 TC with 47,000 miles (no mods) into the dealership yesterday for the second time for a Tensioner problem I posted about here,

https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...ight=tensioner

It turns out one of the rods in the engine was making a noise and the tech said that the entire engine block needed replacement. I'm now stuck in a Prius for the next two weeks but I am glad it is still under powertrain warranty.

While searching the forum I found a same problem here,

https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=183717

So if anyone else is experiencing a rattle when the engine is cold and under load you should go right to the dealership and get it checked. With so many Camry engines being built I can't see how this issue won't become a huge reliability problem for Toyota in the future.

quite possibley the previous owner hammered on the poor thing regularly and might not of been the best at maintaining it......good to see it will get replaced though.

I bought the car new with 3 miles on it and it doesn't get abused (except for blowing past a slow driver in the left lane on the highway). I changed the oil every 5k, so I think this is more of a design flaw then wear and tear.

My other car, a 97 Civic with 140K has never had any engine problems, let a lone a replacement. I think Toyota has let a few defective engines out of factory.

LOL, that’s exactly how the car rides. I've gotten used to having no respect on the road.

I get a rattling noise every now and then when it's idling. It's not always when the engine isn't at OT though.

Mine does the same thing at idle but is much louder when you slightly hit the gas and pull off. I would get it checked before your powertrain waranty runs out.

I might take it to the dealer in the morning for a check up. It usually happens after the car is warmed up or I've been driving for a while and then park it and let it idle. I think I'm gonna go check my oil level right now.

I have seen civics die an early death just like any other car. Actually, two friends of mine back home had so many issues with their civics that they swore never to own a honda again. But, just as in this case, they have proven to be reliable cars.. they just happened to be the unlucky few that had those types of issues. The millions of camry motors still out there from years ago (this is not a new engine) with hundreds of thousands of miles means that toyota probably doesnt have a big reliability issue. It is typical that when someone has a bad issue they get mad (which is expected) and then say there is some big reliability issue, which is not very reasonable.

It does suck that you have an issue. And that is IF you do. I have seen more people falsely diagnose a "knock" than I have seen real knocks. There is a good chance they are replacing your engine without need to.. but either way, you get a new engine, so at least some good comes out of it

Well I just let my engine warm up and checked the oil and its above the full mark. And I only have 1000 miles before its time to change it so thankfully it's not drinking oil.

Sorry I miss read.....though you bought it with 47000 on it.......that sucks it went out on you......every mechanical item ever made has a few that get problems.....could be anything from a plugged oil passage,to a bolt not torqued during assembly 100%......and jsut plain bad luck......

glad you have the extened warrenty on it......

The motor in my girls tC is really chattery, and it gets oil changes between 4500-5000 miles, and I use the K&N oil filters with Mobil 1. I noticed it more in the cold weather, and it's kind of had a starting issue sometimes where it doesn't want to start.

This engine makes a few noises normally between valvetrain, VSV valve, etc. Fairly normal for a lot of toyotas.

As far as hard starting, do you mean it cranks slow, or is just has to crank over a few times to start? If the latter, that is also pretty normal for a Toyota and nothing to worry about. Both my tC and our 4Runner have to crank over 3-4 times or so before starting. My saturn, on the other hand starts up on the first or second crank. Just the way they are

I have a question for anyone who knows about engines. I know that the engine in the TC is the same as the one in the Camry with the exception of the TC having a little more HP and torque.

My question is, is the extra HP and torque achieved by tuning the engine for these numbers or is there a physical difference between the 2AZ-FE engine built here in the US and the 2AZ-FE built in Japan?

I want to know this because when they replace my engine I want to make sure I'm going to get the exact engine that was in my car before and not the default 2007 Camry motor with less power (and better gas millage, but who wants that).

Any info would help. Thanks

The Wiki on the 2AZ-FE states,
"The 2AZ-FE is a 2.4 L (2362 cc) version built in Japan and at TMMK in the USA, obtains a total displacement of 2362 cm³ with 88.5 mm (3.5in) bore and 96.0 mm (3.8-in) stroke, resulting in a compression ratio of 9.6:1. Output is 157 hp (117 kW) at 5600 rpm with 162 ft·lbf (220 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm. The 2AZ-FE also has one-piece cast camshafts. Output for the 2007 Toyota Camry is 158 hp (118 kW) and 161 lft·lbf of torque. There is also a version of the 2AZ-FE engine with 161 hp (120 kW) and 163 ft·lbf (221 N·m) of torque made in Japan for the Scion tC. A 166 hp (124 kW) version is in the 2006 and newer Rav4. This engine is available for the Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe twins as well as the Toyota Corolla beginning in the 2009 model year." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_AZ_engine

That number does not show up on the actual nhtsa search.. only on a couple of other pages on google, so I am not sure where the info came from honestly.,

There is one issue reported to the nhtsa with that description for the 2006 or 2007 model years, and that was a report due to a fire that started while the car was parked. There are no documents associated with it, meaning that it never went significantly further than an owner calling in the complaint to the nhtsa. No tsb/recall etc was issued for it.

I was wondering why I could not find a description of the problem.

Thanks for the clarification.

You could ask someone at Toyota (or ask iGod over on yoursciontc.com) to pull up that actual TSB number (rather than the nstsa number) in the Toyota tsbs to see if it exists as well. My guess, since there is no other info out there on it, is that it does not, but you never know.
