1,798 Miles and my Mom has the Check Engine Light
Well my mom was pretty ____ed when she got off the train and started her car. When she turned the ignition the good old Check Engine Light came on and stayed on. She just told me when she got home and shes not to pleased. Were gonna bring it in this weekend while she gets an oil change. If theres a problem and its not covered under warranty I think me and her might flip out. But we will have to see. I'll let you know whats the problem is and how Toyota Service Dept. handles this one.
Check your fuel cap. I know this sounds weird but I had a '99 Grand Am and a couple of months later the CEL came on. I took it to the dealer and they said that it was caused by not tightening the gas cap enough and the fuel system lost vacuum.
If the car seems to be running fine just try tightening the cap, the light will probably go out after the system repressurizes.

Don't confuse your tire presure light for a check engine or maintenance light. It looks like one if you don't know what the lights are. When my tire press. light came on the first time (at 200 miles) I was in shock and scared until I got out the manual.
Look in your manual to see what I am talking about.

Def check the gas cap, as my dealer espec lectured me on this as well. I had a 92 Olds Delta 88 as my last car, and the same thing happened. It cost me $75 to hook it up to the diagnostic machine, lol. Also, you said that she was getting an oil change, my light came on at 5,000 miles for an oil change. Also, it came on when I had a flat tire, and stayed on because the air pressure wasn't up to par in all of the tires I'm guessing.
This happened to me yesterday.. I have had my 08 tc two weeks, it has 900 miles. I got in ready for work, started the car! The check engine light was on! The Toyota dealer is only 2miles from my job- so I stopped on my way to work. I cursed Toyota the whole time bc how could a 2 week car have the check engine light on! This is why I bought a brand new car bc my past car- a 98 civic had a sticky valve. The light was ALWAYS ON.
Anyways, I went to the service window, told him my rant, and he said: when did you get gas? I said Friday night. (its now Tuesday) He said, did you check your gas cap? I said are you kidding? I went out, and popped my gas tank, and sure enough- MY GAS CAP WASN'T ON! He said the engine light should clear in a couple cycles.

Wow, it's amazing how one little light can make us freak out so much.
My old Saturn's light flickered on and off alot, and then it just stayed on for the last 2 years I had it. No problems from the vehicle at all, never shuddered, idled funny, or anything.
My mechanic told me it was a faulty O2 sensor in the emissions system, and we never even replaced it. Ever. Don't freak out so much over a light people!

Yep it could very well be the loose gas cap causing the check engine light to come on-- and being a new car, I'm pretty certain it would be under warranty...unless you have some aftermarket parts that might cause the check engine light to come on such as headers or modified exhaust...
