2005 Scion tC and the Dreaded Transponder Key
I love my new car, however it came with a key that has the buttons and electronics removed. I'm guessing that the transponder chip is still within the key however because the car starts just fine.
I wanted to order 2 new keys however because I'd like to be able to lock/unlock my car from afar (darn our first world problems). I called the local Scion dealership and they tell me that it's $169.99 for the key, and also $100 to program the key. Which, after taxes, basically equates to $300 per key...and I want 2. That is ABSOLUTELY crazy to pay that much for something that I'm sure realistically probably takes them less than 2min to do (minus the making you wait to make you think they've done something extensive).
I found this video on YouTube:
Does this hold any water? Has anyone tried this? Or am I SERIOUSLY stuck with the dealership as my only option?
P.S. I am not opposed to shady, back alley programming because at the end of the day, it's a damn key!

Called and ACE Hardware, and got the answer I needed. $69 for the key, cutting it, and programming the transponder. Not Scion Branded, but I'm 102% ok with that.
The dealership can go f*ck themselves with $300 per key.

At the very least the dealership should NOT charge you another $100 to program the second key since they are already programming the first one. The tech has the car, has the computer hooked up. It should ONLY be $100 for programming.
