3 months still no registration what can I do?
Need some advice, 3months ago I purchased my tC preowned from a well known dealer in NJ, Only problem I havent received my registration for the car, everytime I call, they give me the run around telling me they should have it next week
they say they didnt have the title when they sold me the car and are waiting for the NJ DMV to send it to them. I keep getting letters from the dmv and insurance asking me whats going on. They say if i get pulled over the police have the right to arrest me and impound my car. Does anyone know the law on this, what can I do, I wish I could just return the car and buy one closer to my house, seeing I live in NY. If you ask why I went to NJ for the car, It was selling at a great price. But what can I do, How does a dealer sell a car without having the title
Oh man I hope I could return it get an 06 with the SC

Sorry to hear your having troubles with your tC while you should be enjoying it. The dealer shouldn't sell you the car if they didn't own the title. I do not recommend you be driving around without registration. The DMV is right, police have the right to impound your car if your being stopped without any registration, even if the title is yours later on, you will be responsible for towing and impounding fees. You should take the car back to the dealer tell them to give you your money back since its been 3 months and no one holds the title.
Wish you the best of luck...

Does any law exist protecting buyers from this, Ive been searching online but havent found anything. I would like something more concrete to tell the dealer then I'm mad take it back.
If I decide to return the car

If something is too good to be true, it probably is. Classic case. I wish you the best of luck. Better get what they said in writng if you don't take it back, then at least you can sue later if you should get in trouble. But I'd take it back, if they say no threat to report them to the Better Business Bureau and so on.
The dealer was supposed to transfer my plates to the tC, but as of right now there still registered to my old car an xA. So I dont know if im getting penalized from the dmv for not returning the plates, Right now there out there as if I dont have a car. Goint to the DMV hmm the car is financed so im not sure how that would work
Dealers never transfer plates.. I did that myself at the DMV... It doesn't matter that the car is financed, but they'll need a dealer title or certificate to issue you a NY state title since it was purchased out of state... then you can switch the registration and pay the tax that you didn't pay at the dealership since you bought it out of state.
When i bought my xA all neccesary paperwork and fees were done at the dealer so I could transfer my plates, that being in NY so IDK how it works buying a car out of state. but on the bill of sale it states the extra fees for transfering plates and they did charge me for NY state sales tax. that I do know
If you want to return it for a SC version, you shouldn't have bought it in the first place... let alone buy a car without the necessary documentation! I bought my tC in Maryland (I live in VA) and they gave me temporary MD tags / registration, and after 2 weeks, I got my VA registration / perma plates (they handled everything). My title is electronic, so I think that's one reason why they handled everything.
I don't think a dealership can legally sell it to you without having a title.... It could be a stolen vehicle for all you know.... without that piece of paper saying it's their's and now yours.... you're screwed...
Again this is a well known dealer, it handles 5 or 6 different makes. its not some corner shop with 3 cars on the lot. there was no way of me ever knowing they didnt have the title. I received temporary plates that lasted me a month. they gave me a couple of extension letters but now all I have is please officer theres problems with our paperwork, please dont arrest him letter. Dont get me wrong I love this car I would love to just receive the title and be the end of it, but if it happens to be that i need to return the car I would get a manual with the SC
a well known dealer that sells 5 different makes.......hmmm......sounds like a prime dealership
Sounds like a corner shop with 5 different makes is all. Any dealership that "sells 5 different makes" doesn't sound like it's a good dealership. Seriously, how much can you trust Joe's Car Lot....give me a break.
Anyway, sounds like a nice case of fraud to me. I wouldn't be surprised if the car was salvaged or actually stolen. How do you sell a car that isn't yours.....you HAVE TO HAVE THE TITLE IN ORDER TO TRANSFER ANY TYPE OF OWNERSHIP. Sounds like it was a repo and the dealership won it at an auction....where else does a dealership earn the right to sell 5 different makes?
Go contact the BBB now. Screw them before they screw you and get your money back. The more you wait, the bigger your nightmare. I'm surprised your insurance hasn't cancelled you. By the way, because you don't actually own the car, the insurance company legally has to pay the registered owner & leinholder of the vehicle in case of loss....have fun with that one.

I'm not you, but I'd contact NJ DMV (have the VIN handy) and explain the problem - see if they can help.
Next call would be the NJ Attorney General's office (their consumer protection section if there is one) and ask if THEY can help.
And just to cover all bases I'd do the same for NY offices.
Whatever you do, good luck!!!

Thank you for the advice, but just to clarify this isnt a joe schmo lot, I didnt want to get into names but the place I purchased the vehicle is ramsey nissan which sells nissans and infiniti vehicles, my car was a trade in I believe, The same people own ramsey mitsubishi ramsey ford and ramsey bmw all seperate dealers in ramsey NJ. But I'm going to go with your advice and call the bbb and NJ DMV. Thanks
Dealerships almost never have the titles to their used cars. When someone trades in their car there is useually a pay off. Once the car is traded in then the dealer pays off the lein holder and the lein holder sends the dealership the title which can take up to a month to get the actual peice of paper. The dealership does however check to make sure that the title is good by checking the DMV report on the car. Once the dealer has the title in hand it is given to the customer or the bank that holds the loan. What is happening I am sure is that the person who traded in the tC is causing the problem on the title. This is in no way a scam, but the dealership really needs to be honest about why its taking so long. You should be able to get them to get you a temporary liscense plate for the car.
ohhhhhh...ok, that makes sense. I thought you meant 5 differnt makes on the same lot. Something like 5 different dealerships each selling a different make i.e. Wondries Nissan, Ford, etc. probably wouldn't have confused me.
Anyway, your situation is still wierd. You gotta imagine how long your tC was sitting on thier lot.....b/c if it does take time to get the title, you'd imagine the process would have already started before you bought the car.
Beyond that, you'd imagine your leinholder would figure it out and find out where your title is as they're the ones that technically own the car now.
I'd go to the dealership and give them very slim options in a loud enough voice to catch the attention of their current potential buyers. That always makes for a good show
I'm asinine though, you've gotta be a special case to do stuff like I do
Anyway, good luck with that...I'd try contacting Ramsey corporate too....

Ok, so I made another call to the dealer, and this time they actually gave me some information. They said the reason why I didnt receive my Reg yet is because they havent receieved the title for my trade in, where was this info the last 5 times I called
, that the bank doesnt want to give it up cause of confidentiality issues. although I had told them before I had the title in my possesion and said I would make the trip to give it to them when they had my registration, And the salesman said it was ok. But I wonder how long they were going to wait to tell me that. So in the end they make it out to be my fault. They say I should get the REG 2 days after they get my title. We could only hope.
