Default 5speed instead of 6speed?

I been looking around and even the collora XRS and the matrix XRS has 6speed. how come the scion tC doesn't? What's the reason behind the 5speed? sorry if this topic has already been covered. tried to do a search but came up empty handed.

"Sporty Gearing" with the 5spd, I was told.
6th gear would be nice, but Scion took another cut to keep costs down.

I understand they kept the cost down by keeping it 5 speed....but more then half of us wouldnt mind paying the extra $$ for a 6speed tC ya know?

They should have done an option like the Acura RSX cant you get it in 5speed and 6speed?

I would like a 6 speed if it was an option. Isnt the RSX a 5 speed for the base model and a 6 speed for the RSX-S? Since the tC only comes 1 way I guess it was a cost save. Does Toyota even have a 6 speed that works with the 2.4?

The RSX comes with a 5speed base model. The TYPE-S comes with a 6speed. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for the extra gear? : ) The 6speed seem much more appealing.

Doesnt look promising though...
Just wait for Quaife to make an LSD for our tranny, then ZPI runs an 11 second 1/4 mile. They'd probably just drop the idea of the 6spd, and focus on 10's.

yes our cars need a sixth gear, the revs are soooo high on the freeway, it has a good pull like that, but decreses the gas milage.....PLEASE COME OUT WITH A 6 SPEED!

The tC doesn't need a 6th gear - it just needs some better gearing. The 6th speed in the RSX-S is practically useless. Test driving - even on a highway I cruised in 5th gear.

The tC would have a much better use for the 6th gear that the Acura has but it still isn't "needed."

ZPI is working on a 6 spd solution but RAAMaudio is working on a 5 spd solution. I really hope both succeed. The RAAMaudio tC, thus far, sounds killer. The 12 second tC also sounds killer. Oh well, until then.

Coming from the tC and now driving the new Si, I can say having that extra tall 6th gear is nice to have. While I enjoyed the close ratio gearing on the tC, the rather high RPMs when cruising at 80+ was annoying at the least, and horrid for mileage as well. The first 5 gears in the Si are also close ratio, however 6th is a stretch up, dropping about 1100RPM versus 5th gear at 75+. While the 50-60 range is fine in 5th, 6th gear lowers the RPMs down to a less annoying level and helps loads on mileage. For reference, the Si has the tall 6th gear similar to the RSX-S. I really feel the tC could have benefited from a similar 6th gear, but don't know how that would have affected cost.

for u regular tc owners, 5th gr is more than enough 4 our car when u get some upgrades, it will make 5th feel a lot better.
some of u talk like your goin to redline if u go 85-90mph. STOP CRYIN. i see a 6th gear as a waste unless im road course racing, where i can get it up to 140-over. since scion is for the youngins, there was no point for 6th. the tc is on the "1st car u get when u get your licence" list. a lot of youngins dont care about this crap. they r glad that they can drive to high school or college in a brand new car, not in a hoopty. 6th in the carolla is a generation improvement design cuz its been around longer than some of u. its to keep the sales up. the carolla has earned that 6th just like rx-8s, civics, tibies, (integra) rsx, and sentras.
this topic will not go far cuz the scion population isnt able to voice themselves on this.
