Hey guys,
just had a question about something that happened this morning when I was leaving for work. So i was in the garage backing up, usually when I back up all that I have to do is put the car in reverse and it moves down the driveway naturally since it is downhill slightly. Well it didnt move when i put in in reverse, so I hit the gas kind of hard and heard a pop type noise when it began to back up, wasnt sure what that was? im pretty **** when it comes to my car and didnt want to freak out about this, thanks guys!

 

E-brake still on?

Was it raining last night? Could have had damp brakes and there was a tiny bit of rust between the pads/rotors. This will sometimes make a bit of noise when breaking free.

 

Did you run over something or have your parking brake on?

 

Nope, the E brake wasnt on, the brakes may have been damp though

 

I've never had my brakes make a popping noise when wet. They squeak though sometimes.

 

Exactly, mine have squeaked but have never made a sound like i heard today

 

auto or stick?
if stick, it could have been rust just like ack154 said.

Its an 06 auto

 

After driving in the rain the previous day/night, mine will usually make this sound when backing up in the morning.

You should hear 'em after they've been sitting out in the rain for a week or so. blah

 

theres a reason if you washed your car u take it for a spin afterwards so this doesnt happen..This happend to me a while ago, haha.. Your fine..

 

hmm.. that's weird

you sure you didn't run over a rock/pebble while backing out in your driveway, or maybe something was lodged behind the wheel?

 

I think i know what it was


It was one of those dam neighborhood kids playing hide-n-seek and had the bright idea of hiding behind your rear passenger tire. I'll let your imagination figure out what the pop was.

When you hit the gas did it sound as if you were still in neutral(park)? When it poped, did you start moving fast because of the high rpms or did it slowly speed up?

 

My guess is the brake pads shifting. Doesn't have to be rust to get it to do that, but they shift when you go from park to reverse or drive. Might have been a fluke, but I wouldn't worry.
