Battle of the Econo Coupes
I just ran across this while surfing the internet.
... future competition for an S/C tC?
http://www.chevrolet.com/cobalt/
I'm actually glad to see the US mfgs. trying to keep up with the times. Chevy spends so much time with the Corvette, it's about time that knowledge and technology starts spilling over into their lesser cars.... Still... it's probably just a guised Cavalier.
(trying to stir up 'ish, while looking for a new car) ;)

I dont think the S/C Cobalt would be much comp. Its lighter & should put out 200HP. Most ppl here think the tC with a trd s/c will have that same power, but the tC weighs a bit more. Also the cobalt is built on the same platform as the ION
its just been reworked a little to make it stiffer & not as crappy as the ION. Just my $.02 but I dont think there in the same class.
i honestly think the CObalt will be in the next class up for cars.....my friends pre-oderering one early september....the cobalt is supposed to replace the cavalier..looks like a great car..i love chevys...been through a few of em in my days. I was thinkin of holding out for it untill i bought my box..
I don't really know how you can put it in a higher class than the tC. They both are roughly the same price (a s/ced tC would cost about 22 i'd imagine) and have roughly the same amount of horsepower (although I believe a supercharged tC will have more than 205 horsepower). It looks like a nice car though, i'd never buy a chevy.
i have to admit... the car looks nice from the pix. But i wonder how the real production one look ... cuz there's a fine print stating that actual production model may vary.
as for competition...it's all good. But i doubt the chevy will retain much resale value as the tC ... not to mention long run reliability of Toyota. my .02 cent
overall..tC is still a better buy....considering features, design, and quality. But i give props to Chevy for trying...
Hmmm... well until the Colbat comes out, I'll say the 2 are evenly match (assuming that the tC S/C takes the price of the car to $21K). I think it is going to come down to drive train performance and suspension make up. I read all over how people love the handling characteristics of the tC, and only request stiffer springs and front and rear swaybar for really agressive driving. Unless the Cobalt comes with some kind of double wishbone multi link suspension, it's going to be a tough call. The looks are what really set the cars apart. The SCION has a pretty refined look to it. Like a performance luxury car. It has no wings, spoilers, airdams, skirts, or gaudy chrome and it looks fantastic. This SS Cobalt (which look really nice and agressive), looks ,to me, like a domestic car TRYING to be cool. It's really nice, don't get me wrong, just too much 2F2F for me. And that thing would have to have a dam nice interior for me to consider it. IMHO, US cars have always had a plastic feel to the insides... no matter how much the car cost.
I saw it in person at the chicago AS. It looks very, very good. It was the car I planned to buy until GM delayed the launch until spring (It was supposed to be rolling out just out the the the TC came out this summer).

You can install it yourself and save about $400.00 but, it would only have a one-year warranty (if installed correctly). If the dealer installs it it would be covered by the 5-year / 60,000 mile powertrain warranty.

i think the SS cobalt will be some competition, but its sticker is higher or about the same as the srt-4, which is a better vehicle, and then you still can boost the price of the SS cobalt with options that its 22k sticker price doesnt have. If you were to take a standard tC and then add everything the cobalt has the tC price would still be lower and would have a couple extra features that the cobalt doesnt. And like i said if its performance you want and are sticking to an american car get an srt-4 thats the best bang for your buck and is still domestic, heck it gives imports a run for their money
