not true... getting a free flowing intake and exhaust setup reduces the restrictions that air has to both enter and exit the engine. This makes it easier for the engine to work and thus better gas mileage is seen.

The more air you can get into the engine, the more power it will make, its as simple as that. The less restrictive you make its intake and exhaust, the more power you will be making because you are allowing more air into the engine
intake and header will give better gas mileage. the reason y most ppl lose mpg with these things installed is as soon as they are installed they gun it all the time because they like the couple extra hp's and they like the sound. if u don't gun it all the time and drive regular u will see improved mpg.
About the only way to get better gas mileage and make your car faster is to lighten it. An intake is going to give you more air into the engine which means more fuel will be needed to keep the AFR stable. Shaving pounds off the car will get you better fuel economy (less weight to pull around) as well as a quicker car (less weight to hold you back).

The same goes for cylinder head design. A crappy head design will hurt both milage and power. A good design (say like the LS1 head) will improve both milage and power.
Again, more often used on V8 engines now, a roller cam, roller rockers, etc will allow the engine to operate more efficiently, increasing both milage and power.
People doing these things and seeing a decrease in milage get this result because they are driving it harder to take advantage of the power.

a stock engine is set-up to get the best gas mileage and power combination. There intakes and exhaust systems are set up for the engine to work as efficient as possible. thats why toyota/honda/nissan engines are being praised in the last decade. they are working as efficient as possible, giving us the best bang for the buck, and giving us good gas mileage.
as soon as you start relacing OE parts with performance parts, you are going to see a drop in gas mileage. its a real world fact. intakes and exhausts do not improve gas mileage.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, however, OEM parts are designed to be a compromise between power, economy and comfort.
I will say that most Japanese cars are so efficient already, that when adding items such as a header or intake has much less effect than on an older (typically) American made car. But it does improve things on both sides of the spectrum.
Stock intakes are designed to be quiet, while trying to be efficient. Same as exhaust.
I've been working on cars for 14 years, so I have certainly tried just about everything and experienced the results myself.
Tuning your car to run leaner than stock can also improve both milage and power, but at the same time increases the risk of pre-ignition...
