Default breakin' her in

the manual states:
1) avoid full throttle acceleration
2) avoid driving at long distances at a steady speed

i accelerate fairly quickly but never pass 4000 rpms during this break-in.
when they say avoid full throttle acceleration do they just mean not to go all out and floor it, or are they saying to really baby it? i would think that a little revving would be ok to get the engine used to it.

also about long distances at a steady speed...
i have 500 miles on my car so far.
i would like drive 1.5 hrs away this friday. and then of course 1.5 hrs back.
is this too long of a distance and would it be alright as long as i fluctuated my speed a little bit?

i just thought that the guidelines given by the dealer and the manual are very general and was just wondering what other new owners think and whether or not anyone was given anymore specifics when they bought the car.

What I'm getting is to.. accelerate hard and decelerate hard through the gears, and don't keep at a certain speed for a "long" time. Correct for the most part?

do most people on this forum believe that what motoman said is the best way to break in your engine?

I purchased my xB in SoCal. I drove it around San Diego a lil bit for a day or two, and then drove 300 miles back to Las Vegas. Not a problem!

Don't worry, just drive it however you need to. It'll be fine.

I do, his theory makes sense, the way to seat the rings with heat, etc. I didnt follow his instructions and take it on a dyno, or race it or anything. I just drive like I do normally, and thats means anywhere from 1000rpm up to 6000.

Thats not the way I did mine. Sounds good for race moto engines that get rebuilt all the time but not sure about anything else. Although I'm no pro so who knows.

I dont remember exactly when the oil change was reccommended in the article, but I did it at 150 miles and again at 600. I'll prob get my third free one done soon(I have about 1500 miles on my car)

did the dealer say anything to you when you went in for an oil change at 150 miles?

They looked at me like I was crazy and tried to convince me that I didnt want an oil change. I had to repeat over and over that I was aware of the fact that I had only 150 miles on the car and wanted to get the oil change anyways. They made me sign a paper acknowledging that I willingly getting an oil change at 150 miles and that the dealer did not try and trick me into getting it done. LOL

Was there a reason why you did an oil change at 150 and then another at 600?

Wanted to make sure that all the metel shavings from the initial wear in of the motor were out of the system.

Ya, but i figure since i didnt do the break in on the dyno or the track, it wasn't as hard core as what he was doing.
