I don't even pay attention to it anymore. I always drive with the A/C on and windows/sunroof open ALL the time, and do mostly only city driving. I usually get low to mid 20's, even with a few romps.

well i remember one time, they did that myth of mythbusters to see which was more efficient, open windows, or using the ac.....after like 3 hrs of driving at 50mph on a track, they both were about equal on gas mileage consumption.....or the results were neglible....i say, its not going to effect your gas mileage too greatly +/- 1 mpg....if it hot, use the a/c....thats what its there for!!!

Not really, I do all city driving so having the windows open BARELY increases drag, and todays A/C compressors don't reduce performance/economy anywhere near what they used to. They only rob about 5-6 hp at most on our cars, and when cruising at about 45 mph, a vehicle only needs 10-15 hp to overcome wind resistance, so that loss in HP isn't even noticed.

I wouldn't worry about it, its a very small amount, infact ac wastes less gas than windows being down, but for the small amount of extra gas being used its worth it for the comfort, because like malibu said its a loss of around 1 mpg if that.

For constant a/c system useage ive found that most customers see about a 7to 10 percent hike in their gassoline useage

i use my A/C quite a bit seein that i live in So-Cal and its the summer, but i dont really see a difference in my gas usage. i mean its used up quicker but not that quick for me to want to stop using it to save money

Can't remember if it was Consumer's Reports or CarTalk that said they did the testing - the difference is negligable.

we just checked our last 2 fill-ups' both times avg of 28. And that's with either the AC on or the roof open/windows down, some stop/go traffic jams mixed with spirited interstate driving, and the all important "got a SC so may as well use it" on hard ramp blasts.
so if it's too hot--use the ac; your comfort is worth something...

AC does not use more gas, it takes away available engine power.

And thats about it.

I drove 250 miles today at 78mph average and got 34 mpg.
AC was on.

dont worry about it. if it was a mid - big gas consuming item it wouldn't be in a Toyota.

I live in Houston, and my AC is never off. I still manage to get 330 miles out of a tank. That's about 70% highway, though.

Consumer Reports. The difference was 1mpg @ 65mph.

You can even get most of that 1mpg back by turning up the temp control after the car has cooled down. Dark tint really helps out as well.

When the car is cooled down I can usually turn up the temp (i.e. make A/C less cold) even on the hottest Florida days. (Unless I'm headed west in the late afternoon, then the A/C gets cranked up big time. )

Tilting the sunroof up and closing the sun shades helps out the most IMO, when the car is parked.

^^I do that + crack windows during our dry season if no rain is forecast.
But no way after June 1st in Florida. Picture hard rain ... going sideways, ... & not just during tropical storms.
