yeah. . . the tC isn't exactly a Ferrari, you know. It's an econocoupe. But stock vs stock, both being manual, it'd be close. Hp isn't always the best measure of acceleration. Toyota's are known for their fat torque curves and powerband. The lexus LS430 is less powerful (in peak hp ratings) and has less displacement than its comporable competition, yet out accelerates everyone of em. Same goes for the Corolla vs comparable models. . . and the Echo.

But these cars for this market at this price range aren't about burning rubber. . . they are about style, convenience, resale, comfort, amenities, and durability/reliability. If you include these kinds of things, there is absolutely no comparison to the tC. It dominates its market. You want a fast car? Get a Neon SRT-4. . . or better yet, for apples to oranges, a $10,000 motorcycle will absolutely embarass all of these cars, and most sports exotics as well. What else will get you to 200mph for less than $15k, and outaccelerate vipers, ferraris, lambo's, corvettes, etc etc etc. I'm saving up for my Yamaha R1! That, or I will buy a REAL sports car when I can afford it. Or if I want to go the cheap route, it'd be a Camaro with some bolt ons running 12's.
very true ...i like the way you think.... the TC does as you say dominate its class in style, reliability*...etc. and i didnt buy it for speed....i was actually going to get an srt-4 but i already have my turbo sunfire and also as you do say to embarass quite a few people i have a 2001 honda cbr 929 which cost me a whooping $3000........
i just put the link because the people on that site are just stupid and i want ppl to put them in there place(keep in mind i own a sunfire i have beenpart of that site or a few years)...not sayin the Tc is a drag car or nothing

Coming from owning a couple J-body's I've been on that board for awhile, last was 95 Sunfire GT 5 speed with some HO parts. The Sunfire was a fun car but I feel that the gearing on the tC is way better than on the J-body. Also it's kind of funny how people always look at the weight of a car and horse power to determine it’s performance, there is more then just those two factors in making a car fast or not.
stock to stock-I have to give it to the tC
kinda like stock to stock an R-1 will spank your 929
take no offense a 929 is a great bike I had a 1999 R-1, instruct for trackoholics.com on my 600 RR and I am waiting for delivery of my 2005 R-1 (black).
good thread-hopefully you get to do a track day or 2 this year-you'll love your 929 even more after you learn how to ride it properly

Stock sunfire runs 0-60 in about 8.5 secs... not quite a match for the tC. Now with turbo of course... but the tC is natrually aspirated.... and *sigh* will be until the sc or turbo comes out. Not a bash on the sunfire, but its funny to see what some of those guys say in those vs posts. Especially the guy who is running 17s in a 5spd tC
The 5spd can consistently run 15.7 - 16.0 1/4 miles...
I envy both of you guys with those bikes!!!! The R1 as well as the CBR are very nice rides. I am looking hard at the R1 right now. Just sold my RM
becuase I moved have no way to haul it around for now... so I need to find something for the street...... then a truck... then a CR250 ...... then more stuff for the tC.... then...... heh heh toys!!!! Speaking of... if there are any people familiar with Minnesota and know of some good dirt bike areas..... lemmie know!!!!

I've never been partial to the Sunfire. I, as a rule, tend not to like domestic cars. Granted there are exceptions, but they just don't compete with the imports in terms of quality.

No post-1995 J-Body ever came with a V6, let alone a V8.

There are a lot of parts available for 'em. . . and cheap too. And yes, J-body's never had V6's or V8's. . . and there is no way you can outrun V8 american muscle in a GT-S (well maybe a newer Mustang GT). Realize that it is VERY VERY easy to get a Camaro SS to lazily run sub 13 second qtr miles. VERY EASY. Even a Z28 blows it away stock. . . and modified, there is no way you will even come close. It's a really stupid comparison. I personally would much rather own the Celica, but in terms of acceleration, they have you beat, unless you spend $40,000 in modifications. . . even then, good luck.
