Be careful how you shut your doors...
Hey! This happened to me just last night, and I figured I would give other tC owners a heads up...
Last night I was picking up a friend who lives in the country at the top of a hill. I was getting out of my car and shutting my door when a gust of wind caught my door and shut it rather hard. This, in turn, caused my side air bags to deploy on the driver's side (both the side and the side curtain). Luckily, my window wasn't up...I am scared to see what might have happened.
Anyway, I called my Scion dealership and they said they would fix it first thing on Monday...

same thing has happened to me, minus the airbags deploying. my girlfriend opened the passenger door once and the wind caught it and swung it into the car next to her. luckily it was a car exactly like my old car and it only broke the side marker light, and i happened to have a spare side marker from when i changed mine to clear.

Those airbags should not have deployed!!! An airbag deploying when it should not can cause a SERIOUS injury! Good thing you werent in the car. Now I am kind of glad I didnt get the side airbags

I will fix those pics. But, yea, the scary thing was, the door didn't shut that hard. I could have prolly slammed that door harder if I wanted to!
Yes the car was running. It even started back up for me to drive it home... It was kind of funny. Try driving to your house 20 minutes away with your curtain airbags rolled up to the ceiling.

In the 2nd picture, the big white thing along the top of my door is my curtain airbag that I rolled up...hehehe. Also, the one that came out of my seat...I rolled it up and pushed it back in there too.

Why is everyone figuring that this is a car-wide defect? Something was wired inproperly or the air bag sensor was way too sensitive, but please don't jump to the conclusion this is a car wide defect. And also, side air bags don't deploy towards the the passengers, they shoot downward (as a shield for the passengers). All I'm saying is, don't be "omg I am so happy I didn't get that feature" just because of one occurance.
That being said, that sucks!

wow thats crazy.
hmm i thought he airbags would only deploy depending if someone is in the seats. isnt that why we have those sensors. the sensors should also indicate how much to deploy the airbag.

^^i think the non-deployment-because-someone-is-not-sitting-in-the-seat might only be for the passenger... Toyota probably figured that there would always be someone in the seat. Also, how far out the airbag goes is probably only the front-crash airbags. No point in the side airbags only going down partially.
