Default Check Engine Light @ 160 Miles

Driving to work this morning and I see that my effin check engine light is on. I just picked up my car last week and it has 160 miles on the odo...No unusual sounds or weird feel to the drive. New to the scion tC world, so is there any sort of issues that other people have had with their tCs? Any ideas as to what it could be?

i really don't wanna go back to the dealership.

Did you put gas in it recently? A loose fuel cap may cause that light to go on-- Other than that, that light can come on for many many many different reasons- there could be a problem in the engine, emission control system, etc.... the only way to know for sure is to get the code and see what's causing the check engine light to come on--
any mods to the car, like headers or anything??? That could cause it to come on as well.....

What is the code? CEL doesnt tell us anything unless you pull the code and tell us what it is telling you.

try going to autozone or advanced auto and they can check it for you.

You dont really even know if you have a real issue, so I wouldnt worry that the car is troublesome or anything And issues can occur right out of the door on any car. Chances are it is something small.

As far as the lemon law, there is la ittle more to it than that. It is more along the lines of them not being able to fix an issue after repeatetd attempts. The law differs from state to state as well. And honestly, I would get my code pulled somewhere else before taking it to your dealer unless you can get the dealer to verify that they will do that part for free. I have heard tons of stories from people that have thier dealer charge them 80 bucks to pull a code if they find that the issue does not fall under warranty. Granted, whatever it is should fall under warranty at this point for you, but there are a lot of shady dealers out there. 80 bucks to pull a code is a complete and total joke (A good, honest mechanic will do that for free), but it happens.

I say just go ahead with the dealership. They have to get used to you being there more often that's the point of warranty.

I hear you & appreciate your advice...I need to know this kinda stuff since this is my first new car and the first time I'm going to deal with warranty service...haven't had the car for more than a week, they better not try to charge me

Usually, when you go to the dealer and your car is still under the warranty parameters (by time and mileage), they will make you sign something that says if they diagnose your car and it turns out to be a warrantable repair, you don't pay anything, but if it turns out that it is a non-warranty repair, you will pay the dealer for the time and/or labor they took to diagnose it.

Its funny that you say that because as I was about to leave the dealership for the first time he mentioned the survey and told me to lie and say it was a great experience (he said it in a joking kind of way but he was serious)...Glad you told me that cuz I was going to take it to the dealership closer to my job instead of where I bought it at...I canceled that appt. and scheduled one at the dealership where I bought it asap, and I will be callin' up my sales guy later today!

i bet that when the dealer filled up your gas tank, the porter forgot to tighten the gas cap!

do go to the dealer and I'd like to bet I'm right with the diagnosis. Let's wait and find out..

Just got back from the dealership service center and the diagnosis was a bad oxygen sensor ...I'm guessing that the fuel cap is a common problem though cuz that's the first thing the service manager asked me when I got out of the car. Thanks everyone for their help...Glad it wasn't anything serious.

Nah...they took care of it for free. Glad they didn't because it would have been world war III in there, haven't had the car for a week yet. thanks for the heads up though, i'll be keeping my eyes open for the future.

Oxygen sensor, do you know which one went bad? And I'm glad you got it fixed! I do remember that in the beginning with the 05's there were bad oxygen sensors then. Then it went away and now it's back with the 08's. Or then again nothing is perfect. Glad you got it fixed
