No, the maint. reqd light comes on for that. If you have a CEL, you need to have the code read (or get a scanner and read it yourself) to see what it is and then go from there.

P0441-the PCM has determined that the purge flow in the evaporative emission contol system is incorrect for the current engine conditions.

Definition....
EVAP small leak/no flow condition

Explanation....
The evaporative emission system is monitored

Probable causes....
1. Defective or loose fuel cap
2. EVAP canister or hose cracked-not connected
3. Purge or vent solenoid defective
4. vacuum leak at engine

P0455- The PCM has determined that a large leak exists in the evaporative emission control system

Probable causes....
1.defective, loose or missing fuel cap
2. Evap canister broke, hose cracked or not connected
3. purge or vent soloid defective
4. vacuum leak at engine

So.... after all the B.S. both codes are related and i would bet you a million dollars the reason for the codes to pop up is the the gas cap was eather off or not tight for a lenght of time. So... its an easy fix, just take it to autozone and use there OBDII tester (they will let you use it free if you do it in the parking lot) and reset the codes, and make sure the gas cap is tight from now on or these codes can come back.

Yeah those are all EVAP codes, tighten your gas cap and clear the codes. If they come back try replacing the gas cap before you do anything else, that's the most common fix (cheapest too).

Will do.

The guy looked the code up on the machine and it read "check gas cap."
I unscrewed the gas cap, took it off and put it back on. The guy did clear the codes so i will see if it comes back. The last time i got gas i bought it in NJ where they pump your gas so maybe the guy didn't put it on correctly. We will see.

Thank you all for the responses.

That happened to me last year and it ended up being the same thing, my gas cap wasn't on tight enough. It's a small thing but it's cool the light comes on for that.

well.. the whole fact that there are at least two states i can think of that forbid you to pump your own fuel is kinda messed up..

and the fact that not only do you get people that don't do it correctly (like your case)..
but you also have some people that grow up in these states... and when they move out..

they don't know how to pump their own fuel!?! yea... doubly stupid.

That last part is so very true! Most of my family lives in NJ and when my cousin came to visit, she didn't know that in VA you pump your own gas. It was basically her first time pumping gas in her car on her own! I was like .

True story.

I took a co-worker out one time just to hang out and go to a bar to catch up. He lived in NJ all his life. He decided to drive in the city because he said he wanted to. He says he needs gas and pulls into a station. He pulls up to the pump and looks straight and doesnt move for like 2 mins. I look over at him and say WTF are you doing ? He says where is the guy that pumps the gas ! After dying laughing i said we pump it ourselves in PA. He looks at me like a deer and headlights and says can you show me how?
Man card REVOKED !

while i was living on the east coast... i don't know what it is about NJ drivers... and maybe i had tunnel vision towards them...

but whenever i saw a driver do something stupid (i.e. cut people off, drive like a moron)... as they pass and i see a NJ license plate.. i just shake my head.

also... i'm pretty sure everyone already knows this.... but the turnpike can suck by *****.

Those people are from South Jersey and central jersey. They dont know how to drive. People around the NYC area know how to drive because you have to be an _______ to survive driving in NYC :D

i lived in new york.. i can vouch for how good the drivers are there.
you have to be good to be able to survive.. and i was able to fit in very well.

i'm not sure how the jersey drivers i saw driving out of their state were able to survive.. most can't even fill up their own fuel... and i think the only reason why they were able to survive is that the drivers around them have to be that much better to compensate for their lack of skills.

i'm still wondering what moronic "genius" engineered the turnpike...

Just for future searchers although there aren't many, taking the gas cap off and putting it back on fix the problem. The check engine light hasn't been back since.

Thank you all.
