Default Comparison, Civic EX vs Scion TC

Since I own both cars I will do my best at a unbiased comparison between the two. Why compare the two? The Civic is a very popular car and the Civic EX is priced close to the Scion TC.

Civic EX advantages

Better gas mileage
No bump in floor of backseat
Antenna integrated in back window
Back seats more comfortable and seem more roomy
Air filtration system
Maybe one of the best resale values in the car industry

Scion TC advantages

More torque and horsepower
Newer, more agressive styling
Better powertrain warranty 5/60,000 versus 3/36,000 for the Civic
More standard features like MP3 player, dual moonroofs, flashers on rearview mirrors, headlights that automatically turn off.
Hatchback with fold down rear seats for more cargo space
Uses timing chain instead of belt and has noninterference engine
17 inch wheels compared to 15 inch for the Civic

You left out the tire pressure monitoring system that the tC has.. or maybe you just didn't know it had it!! :-)

Hey Zizi,
I assume you are comparing to a 2004 Civic EX. FYI.. with my 1996 EX Coupe, I don't think I had any but the last advantage on your list! I am getting almost exactly the same gas mileage which is surprising but probably because my Civic was 8 years old. Really, the ONLY thing I miss about my Civic is the huge trunk. -Jayme

I was just trying to do a unbiased comparison. Anyway, I like my Scion TC more than my Civic EX. My wife now drives the Civic, hehe. Anyway the VTEC engine does get better gas mileage than the non VTEC engine. 31 in city with air conditioner on and 39/40 on the highway.

In 1 or 2 years we are going to trade in one of our cars for a Nissan Titan. If we trade in the Civic, I have to teach my wife to drive 5 speed.

It is funny because when I met her 5 years ago she had a 5 speed car, but now claims she does not know how to drive manual, haha.

We are moving to Arizona in 2 years. We are gonna tow one of the cars with the truck and sell or give away our furniture. She does not want to drive 2000 miles.

I have had 2 Nissans before and I think they make great cars. The Titan looks great and can tow 9,000+ pounds so it will do the job. Plus it is always nice to have a truck to move stuff around in. I am going to wait and get the 2005 Titan though.

the co-worker i was talking about in earlier post he got a 00 EX, getting about 34 MPG, so i guess 04 one has better mileage.

i think i will trade my tC in when the next scion come out (scion truck?). ....getting a manual next time for sure....

a smart shopper will choose tC over civic ex. i really don't see advantage for civic other than mileage.

As a fellow San Franciscan, for my daily driver, I got the A/T without a second thought. No sense in battling the hills and traffic after a hard day's work.

As a former Honda owner and lover to now a Scion owner and Toyota technician I can safely say the tC is the superior vehicle. My Mom has a 2003 Civic EX, its a nice car but sort of bland. I don't care for the Civics after 2000.

my gf was going to buy her dad a Titan, he's a landscaper.

But then we went to a dealership and he sat behind the wheel and couldn't see the street.

He's like 5' 2".

So, I think they might go for a Tacoma instead.

huh? all honda's are V-TEC... better gas than a non v-tec? so what honda car doesnt have v-tec?

v-tec engines are made by honda the same way how toyota's got VVT engines

civic got more gas mileage because it only has 128hp.

then again honda's V-TEC is very well developed

We were talking about the Honda Civic here. The Civic DX/Value package and the Civic LX do not have the VTEC engine.

Actually my Scion TC has cheaper insurance than my Civic EX.

The Scion TC is like $270 every 6 months
The Civic EX is like $304 every 6 months

full coverage
