Default Consumer Reports (Radar / GPS)

I have a radar detector, but it is at least 5 years old, and doesn't appear to be extremely effective. I am not looking to 'evade' the law, but more so want it as an extra set of 'eyes', if you will. I want one that is a good value, possibly middle of the road. Willing to spend possibly around $300. What does Consumer Reports recommend? Possibly if you scanned the page and either emailed it to me / posted it, that would be great.

As for GPS, I am not very familiar with these units and what there is to offer as far as options, so I would like some feedback on what is good, what to avoid, what to look for in a GPS, and possibly a Consumer Reports page with that as well.

Thanks a ton!

I love my Beltronics RX-65 radar detector. It has never failed me....even on Lasers.

As for GPS? Use Mapquest. It's free and you won't end up rear-ending someone while you're staring at a 3 inch screen trying to figure out where you are.

I shall take a look. I want to see what the 'experts' say.

I have been doing this, and I have a pretty good sense of direction. On occasion though, I end up getting stuck in traffic, and I usually take exits off of the freeway, and sometimes need an aid to find my way back. I make it, but I'm sure I could do better... but anyway, I suppose I will wait on the GPS.

I gave up on radar detectors, none of them have ever worked for me and they clutter up my dash.

I have my pioneer d3 i use for navigation and it works great. I don't like the units mounted on the dash.

i currently have a Passport Escort x500. this is a reliable company and have been making radars a long time. mine works great. :D

my friend has the VALENTINE V1 (it is the best radar on the market to date) if your willing to pay big $ for the V1, its worth the price.

i sold my radar b/c it didnt do much and blocked my vision. also, i have an old garmin, but i keep it my cup holder. it works fine, but i only use it for long drives.

i would say go to best buy or any electronics store and see what they have.

I took a look on CNET and it looks like the Escort Passport 8500 X50 (lol @ long name) is pretty good as well. I don't have much time at this very moment to do detailed research, but I appreciate all of your feedback.

This one and the Bel X-65 are neck and neck....just depends on which one you find cheaper on eBay!

Agreed on the V-1 being the best...but they're HELLA $$$$!!! Oh yes...and just barely better than the two mentioned above.

valentine one FTE.

but i ditched my radar too.
i feel it gives you a fake sense of security.

alot of time i would fool myself into thinking i could speed because i have a radar detector.

and ive got buddies who talk like their invincible to everything just because they have a radar...

they are not. neither was i.

i actually got 2 speeding tickets WHILE i had my radar detector. now that i ditched it, i have yet to get another one.

Valentine 1
ive had multiple and this is the best by FAR
doin 130 down the highway and it ticks tick tick i slow down and sure enough 1.5 miles up the road there is a state pig.
and just think of it this way 400 dollars isnt to much... well i saved my car and jail time right in ONE situation and theres been more then just that one... nothing is 100 percent with a lasar since it cant be dected unless its directly on your car so if that happens it happens but the v1 does pick it up off another car if it reflects off of it.. but anyways hands down v1 my neighbor has 5 lol so they must be good.. and he owns 911 turbo, cayenne twin turbo, lambo gallardo, so that has to tell you something

I just drive no more then 10mph over the speed limit and have yet to get a ticket. Except 3 years ago in Texas. But the State Police are buttholes.

I got a GPS when i moved out here to Phoenix a while ago because I was new to the area. I didn't want to spend a fortune since I was pretty broke at the time, so I bought the TomTom One. It does its job and has yet to fail me. You can get it for $100 online give or take. I would recommend it for the value.
