Default Credit Check

Just came back from the Scion dealership and I had a quick question, maybe some other dealer's out there can answer it.

They did a credit check on me and I had asked if I could keep a copy of the credit report just for my records. They told me no. Not only that, but they even said that it's against the law and they could lose their license if I even look at it.

Just to look at it? Is this true?

Thanks!

Default thanks

i have done that before, but he had it right there so I just wanted to look at it. Not only that but it's been checked a few times before and I don't want my credit to get any lower since you lose points just for checking.

anyone know if my dealer was lying to me?

thanks again.

I think he was screwing with you. It's your credit information. Since they checked your credit and they have records, you need to see the records to make sure what they are telling you is what is written on the report. Everytime that someone checks your credit report, you are entitled to review the report that they have obtained for accuracy.

http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/fcra.htm

Go to www.myfico.com. It's not free. However, in some states it is free for you to obtain a credit report.

Default Is it?

He said that even though it's my credit report he still can't let me look at it. He also said he understand why it sounds weird that even though it's my information I still can't look at it but it's the law.

I live in Florida by the way. I really don't want to do another credit check, whether it's free or not.

I still don't know if the dealer was telling me the truth.

You can pay to check your credit score through myfico.com like they said, if you check your credit you do not lower your score, only when another possible lender checks it does your score lower. so just take a few bucks and check the score. I check mine right before I have anyone else check it. That way I know what they see me as when I go in the door.
I dont know about in FL but in SC they let you see the report they pulled if you want, well they have for me anyway.

Default why?

it doesn't seem to make sense to me. how can you not look at your own personal information? I would understand if it was the dealerships information or something but it's my information.

and about doing my own credit check where can i find information about not losing any points for checking own credit check?

thanks!

just go to http://www.myfico.com on the left side of the page right above the button that says Get My Score, it says "You can’t hurt your FICO scores by checking them frequently on myFICO.com!" and I have also seen that on other sites as well Myfico is just an easy one to use

I didnt want them to pull my credit since I wasnt applying for financing at the time, so I just printed up a copy of my report that I pulled myself, and they were happy with that since it also saved them money by not having to pay to pull my credit.

Wow. That's weird. I was able to look at my credit report and verify the information, but I was not able to take it with me. As far as I know (at least here in TX), you can view your credit report, but you cannot take it with you because they paid for it, and they might need to use it later.

Even at banks they wont let you see it. I applied for a savings account. I was approved for it and my stuff was right in front of the guy which was in front of me, so I turned it around and he quickly nabbed it and said sorry. He then told me that I should check myfico.com. If you get denied a loan, they will send you a letter in the mail and let you check your score for free through that. Otherwise your not allowed to see it normally.

Hello there, I've been registered for a little bit, but after reading this thread I had to reply and make it my first post. I am a Credit Bureau dispute specialist for Navy Federal Credit Union here in VA and I can answer your question as why you couldn't take your report.

Your dealership cannot give you a copy of the credit report they pulled up because they are NOT a Credit Reporting Agency (i.e. Equifax, Experian and TransUnion). It is against the law for them to give you a copy, you can read it while it's there on their desk, but can't take it with you. Simple as that.

Yes, it is YOUR information and YOUR credit, but it is not the dealership's place to provide you with a copy. If you need a copy of your credit report, you can get them for usually $9 from www.equifax.com , www.transunion.com or www.experian.com . The best and easiest is to get the 3-in-1 report from Equifax for I think $24.95, it will show you what the three major bureaus have and will link you to each bureau's dispute webpage if you have a credit dispute.

Word of advice, DO NOT get a credit report from sites like freecreditreport.com or stuff like that, their information is usually outdated and innacurate. Another pointer: your credit score DOES NOT go down if you request your own file, it only goes down when possible lenders pull it up.

But the dealer did not even let me look at it while at his desk. Isn't there something wrong with that? I guess I can understand why he wouldn't let me take it home, but to even look it is against the law?

Thank you.

That is pretty weird, it could be a policy of that particular dealership. Now, from my experience, some dealers will go over the info with you while they have it on the screen/printout, but most that I've dealt with allow you to see it.

Best thing to do is to get your own, and walk into the dealership with it, you may or may not be able to get a little bit off the cost of the car since they charge you some $ for them pulling your credit report.

i'm really not sure who you dealt with when it happened to you, but i will explain our policy. i can go to the back and request an app. to be pulled, and that app. does not leave the business office unless you are with a finance official in their office. only a finance official can show you the report but i believe they cannot let you leave with it.

so if it was a salesman who said he couldn't show you, he could have been right. i can't show someone their report or discuss it really at all because i am not a certified finance official. hope this helps.

yes it was a salesman, and i didn't want him to discuss it with me i just wanted to take a quick look at it, that's all. i didn't think it would be such a big deal to see my own credit report.
