Default curious: how much weight can the keyhole support?

I have a Victorinox knife on there that is 2.4 oz, so while it is a little weighty for an item on a keychain I don't think it'll cause problems... but I did get curious as to how much weight the keyhole could actually support before damaging the key/keyhole?

It's just out of stupid curiousity

I have about 50 keys(summer janitor for school)on mine and i'm pretty sure it weighs more than your knife. should be ok to put it on there.

well, I worked valet before f*cking up my knee. there were some people (mainly women) who had about 2 lbs of keychains (some of which included pepper spray!), and I never had a problem with the keyhole in cars, even with POS Ford's and Chevy's.

Oh, the only problem I had with big ___ keychains, is that when running down the ramp, the keys oon my caribeaner would swing around and hit me in the nuts.

yeah it shouldn't cause any problems.. but I hate the rattles the keys make when swinging back and forth over bumps more than anything..

All I got on my key is the scion keychain. The sound when going over bumps blends in with the tC's rattles nicely.

But I don't mind when I valet the C6 vette. Those are fun.

It's better in a crash to not have a big bunch of keys, as they commonly pierce the knee. Saab is the only company that knows how to put the key in a safe place.

Saab are idiots. Why put the keys in hte center console, it's not about safety.

I have no idea how you think that keys will effect your knees in a crash, they're not even close to touching the leg.

Everybody wants to be a little different.

In regards to your question, the ignition is probably built very sturdily, and the key is built with lesss tollerance than the ignition, hence you can break the key, but not the ignition.

I'm sure some abusive person can somehow manage to ____ it up. But I'm guessing u'd need a lot of weight to jack up the key/ignition.

You'll be suprised to see what does and does not effect you in a crash. Things you think that would not hurt you, can easily find its way in you. Like here's a peice of info: never rap your thumb around the steering wheel as it will rip you thumb off like it almost did mine when I had my bad crash.

umm, why'd you wrap your thumb around the steering wheel? didn't want to let go?

that's obvious that it'd be harmful in a crash, but keys? not likely. since they're no where close to you.

It absolutely will wear out the ignition sooner. Its not a matter of the weight breaking anything. It is the extra weight swining around as you drive.. slowly wobbling the key in the ignition switch. Amost every car I have seen have the ignition switch replaced abnormally soon had a driver with a ton of junk on the keychain.

Think of it like this. You have a weight hanging on the end, swinging around like a pendulum as you drive. Each time it swings it pulls the key in different directions, slowly wearing the key mechanism. Add more weight, and the effect is worsened.

I keep two things on my keychain, my key and the scion keychain. I carry another keychain with all of my house keys, tC valet key and work keys in my pocket.

Actually I was going 50 and some one pulled out in front of me no time to react it was a instinct to grab the wheel, most people do that. so no it's not that I didn't want to let go I just couldn't.

I'm not saying keys WOULD hurt you just saying the COULD hurt you. You said it yourself "not likely", but with that it's still possible.

No one knows exactly why they did the things they did in a crash.

I can see what engifineer is getting at.

But the other thing, is that only a chick would have tonns of crap on their key.

Another thing would be if you have a small rung attatched to the rung, it would prevent swaying.

I dont see how the keys could harm you in an accident, unless your tall and you have the seat pushed all the way up(but then the airbag will severely injure, if not kill you)

Having heavy keys WILL wear our your ignition faster, not to mention make it easier to steal your car if you don't have a transponder chip.

I speak from experience. Now all I have on my key chain is my scion key ring and that's it.
