Darn Insurance Rates!! - Rant
When I got my 06 tC, I was paying $800 for a 6-month premium. NOW, on the exact same policy with no incidents (tickets, accidents, etc), I am paying $1200 for a 6-month premium. The only thing that's changed during the policy change is that I got older...
I asked geico why my insurance rates went up 50% and they told me that it is because tCs have been involved in an enormous amount of claims. They get an enormous amount of tickets and are involved in an enormous amount of accidents. Such to the extent that the tC is in the top 5 of ALL cars to get tickets and be in accidents. Now I don't know about all you guys, but when I am driving around, I see a billion toyota camrys, honda accords and civics, and SUVs. I do not see THAT many tCs - yet the fact remains that even though there are so much less of them on the roads than cars such as camrys, they are in more accidents and get more tickets
. Lets drive more carefully people....this really blows...

I assume that number refers to the percentage of tCs which get involved in accidents or receive tickets, and not the total numbers. There are way more Camrys on the road, but maybe only 20% of Camrys have mishaps and 30% of tCs (example numbers).
Is that your own policy or your parents policy? On my own policy when I was 18 I payed 2000 a year. When I turned 19 with a complete clean record I'm paying 1900 a year. I still think thats a LOT for a clean record but I'm told in a few years i'll see a bigger drop if my record remains clean. Note I have rate deductions from a drivers program I did, drivers ed in school, etc. but still, id shop around different insurance companys.
Well I had an accident when I was 17 and they do a 5 year lookback, so that probably knocks it up a bit. But that is WITH a multi car discount, all the safety pieces etc.
They increase their rates based on the record of the car. That is how they do it. Why one car at the same value costs more than another? - i guess that's why...

actually, there are a lot of tC's on the road. I read somewhere before that in the last 2 years, it had the highest amount sold of any other car in california (don't know the nations' stats sorry). Now of course there's more camrys and such...they've been around for over a decade. But there have been a lot of accidents regarding the tC. It sounds to me like u just have a crappy insurance company. I know my insurance company would never and has never done that...they only penalize the driver for their error...not the rest of the country/state. I'm in cali (our rates are the highest) and with one carpool violation ticket with 3 months left to go on my record (almost 3 years ago) and me not yet making the mature driver discount...i pay $1500 for a 10 month premium...(yeah i get 2 free months a year baby!)not bad if u ask me... i've had a few friends who have complained about Geico before...they're rape artists like Freeway man!
Wow, and you are with Geico?
I am with Geico too and I am paying 600 every 6 months, it actually came down 80 dollars since I bought my car.
I think iy'll start going down once you turn even older. I bought a brand new 330 when I was 18 and it costed me 2900 to insure. Per 6 month that is.

I did the research, geico is the cheapest insurance company for me. All of the other companies did the same thing. They all raised their rates for the tC because of accidents and tickets. When I first was insurance shopping, I wrote down the quotes from other companies. I took out that piece of paper and now, 2 years later, the insurance premiums average $400 higher than they were - just like my geico premium. Maybe it has to do with where I live, I don't know, but I can't negotiate the quote...
Believe it or not, many insurance companies dont want your continued business. The longer you are with them, the higher the chance you will get into an accident (statistically only, but that is what it is based off of). Normally, if mine goes up abnormally, I just change companies.
Have you tried Ameriprise (Amex owned)? All three of my cars, both drivers and the house we just bought are all under Ameriprise. I didnt even know they existed until about a year ago, and got an offer from them since I have an Amex card. They killed everyones rates for me. Two drivers, 3 tickets between us on our records, an accident, 3 cars insured (one liability only) and our 6 mo premium is about $1200. Will go down once our home+multi car discount hits since we just bought the house. Of course, we are over 25, so our rates are probably a bit lower, but worth checking them out. If you have an Amex, you can bill it straight to there and earn points every month :D And mine has gone down in cost in the year I have had coverage through them. Went down $200/6mo before even buying the house.

I just did an online quote with them after reading your post and Ameriprise quoted me $593 for six months wth the same coverage I already have.
MUCH better than the $804 I pay to Farmers Insurance every 6 months.
My agent is gonna be ____ed when I go into their office to cancel my policy next week...
I have been with them for 19 years.
For anyone wondering why our insurance is so high, just do a search for topics containing "accident" or "f**king cops".
My auto insurance is $2100 a year with no accidents or tickets. When I renewed this year, I told my insurance agent I planned on buying a Corvette in a few years and was curious what my insurance rates would be... it came out to be $5 less than what I'm paying now.

I was with ameriprise, and it costed me 150 less than Geico. But the way they handled their claims sucked.
First they raised my rate by 300 dollars because they decided that I provided wrong info for putting down one of my ticket history with a wrong month that I got like 4 years ago.
And then when I got hit with a shredded tire and needed to get my side skirt replaced, while having 250 comprehensive and 500 collision, they decided it's a collision insurance and so they only had to pay 50 dollars, plus they made sure to inform me that my insurance rate will go up "significantly" if I proceed with the claim.
Save your money and save yourself some trouble in the long run by avoiding Ameriprise.
Also with Geico, I was able to save a load of cash with good student discount, Ameriprise told me at leasts 3 different stories to avoid giving me the discount.

Have heard the same stories about geico, progressive .. hell all of them really. Personally I have never made a claim with Ameriprise so I cant say anything towards that. I had AAA, and they out of the blue raised my rate from $1300/6mo to $2600/6mo and would provide no explanation. I switched to Ameriprise soon after needless to say. Geico has always been nearly twice what the lowest quote I get is so I never considered them.
I had to claim against a state farm driver once, and have to say that state farm handled it better than I could imagine. Very friendly, I called Monday morning and had it fixed in 2 days, got to choose my own body shop (and I didnt have state farm), etc. But I have also heard horror stories about them as well.. so who knows.
A shredded tire hitting your car is a collision however. That would have been the same with pretty much any insurance company. If it is an animal, however, hitting the animal is comp, swerving off the road and hitting a ditch is collision
Unfortuantely insurance companies suck. Ameriprise gives me great prices for a good amount of coverage, so I am happy there for now.
If you are in an area that State Auto covers though, run like hell from them. They will bend, twist and screw up every loophole in the policy they can to get out of a claim.

I think engifineer is right, the insurance company offering low rates must be doing something to keep the rates low. Thing is though, Geico stayed cheap for me while Ameriprise did everything they can for my to pay more, so I ditched them.
I have found that they always seem to skew in strange ways. One day, one company will be cheap, the next they are higher and someone else is cheaper. I just check rates every now and then and switch if one is significantly cheaper, as long as they are a well established company with some good word out there.

Shop around, There might be better deals. Bring that statement to another insurance company, and see if they can beat it. Then if they do take THAT quote to someone else and see if they can beat it.
