Yeah so i wanna buy this car, but the clearcoat is thin as hell. So does anyone know if u can go to a collision shop or whatever and get a thicker clear coat added on the paint. So its not chipping all the time. LEMME KNOW, thanx

Yes I think you can but as you said I would go to a third party (that you trust) for it because the dealer could easily just not put it on.

yeah do u know if they just put the clear coat right on top of the existing one, or do they have to clean off the other one. And who does it, like collision places?

chipping will always occur
cost for clear about almost the same as repainting the entire car

in most cases paint chipping is causes by something hitting the car, a rock, a car door, shopping cart, what ever. clear coat won't repel those things , it MAY make it a little harder to get to the paint and chip it, but i don't know if it's worth the money. i would be inclined to say it wouldn't be.

yeah but this is a big issue with the tC right now. That happns the be the biggest problem. That the clear coat is very thin, and when something like a bug or a rock hits it. It rips off the piece of the paint. And if i get this car, i want to prevent this from happening.

its not just tCs xA xB and other cars
I've had a Lexus is300 Paint is also thin
I had the entire car repainted and still gets rock chips
It is inevitable.
just a facts of life

maybe do the 3M clear bra

Invest in a clear bra. That works. If you dont want chips then stop tailgating semi's and big trucks/SUV's.

Not all clear is expensive if you know where to look. I've gotten PPG clear and hardnener for under $250.00

Definitely go with the 3M Clear bra. I don't have but from all the posts, this is the way to go. Cheap and will prevent the chipping. Now, if you get a big rock thrown back, I doubt anything will help.

If you want someone to just say "YES, more clearcoat will permanently protect your car", I'll say it, but it's NOT true. There is no unchippable finish.(OK, maybe the DeLorean). This isn't a Scion-exclusive problem, look at the front of almost any car these days or do a Google search for "*Car make* rock chips", inserting your make of choice.. It's from things being automated and computer controlled, they can paint more efficiently - less wasted paint, etc. It seems like a huge problem because you're listening to a bunch of car lovers lament everything that happens to their rides.

The reason I suggested shooting the front later is cuz that's where the majority of the chipping occurs. It's from road debris and unless you drive in reverse very fast very often, the rest of the car isn't as much of a target. A car is a consumable item, you got to expect some deterioration. Unless you don't drive it...

You could add layers of clear but they could still chip, the 3M clear bra is about as close to actual paint protection that you will get and even that can get chips thru it, depending on the offending object.
