I know everyone likes to have a break in period, but the way cars are made today, it isn't as necessary as it was say 30-40 years ago. I drove nice for the first tank of gas. Now I drive it like I please...nice at times, hard at others.

Sorry, I missed this post initially. I haven't had my first oil change. I plan on doing it around 3-4k. I checked my oil recently and it still looked new (after 1000+ miles.)

For the first 500mi I took it easy - (Nothing over 80mph - gently cruising...working in and out the gears freely)

Now I'm at 738mi and I still take my time for the most part - 95% just cruising breaking the engine in easy around traffic...but the 5% of times on weekends when I'm heading home on the freeway at 4:30am from leaving a club with few cars on the road - I let it loose...The highest I hit so far was 124mph for around 45 seconds then I eased it back down cause of the highway patrol threat.

I think i might swich to synthetic oil at 1,000mi but besides that it's a Toyota so i'm not worried.

100,000 you mean more like 300,000 + of FUN. It is a TOYOTA after all

I am a firm believer in breaking in engines no matter what the dealer might say. This tC is my 14th new car purchase and I have never had an engine problem EVER. I have never even had to add oil to a car between oil changes. I even owned a car that was a notorious oil consumer, a Mazda RX-7, and it never required topping off. For the first 3,000 miles, I never redline the engine. I also never cruise at the same speed for long periods of time. Lastly, I always use Mobil One. When I sold my RX-7 with 86,000 miles on it, the engine ran like it was brand new and still did not use any oil and the seals had never been replaced.

Didnt really want to start a thread about this but how many ppl in here drive off with their car (less than 3k mikes) w/o warming it up (turning the car on, then leaving). And how long do you have to wait to warm up the car. is 30 sec enough.. a min? Ive heard that new cars doesnt need warming up. is this true?

yes that's true.. 30 seconds is enough.. in michigan.. i usually take a minute before i take off.. (make sure that oil is circulating) especially when it's like -5 degrees in temperature.. you've got it made in texas :D

The manual states that you do not need an elaborate warm up. I usually just start the car, let it sit for as long as it takes me to put on my seat belt and check my mirrors and then just take it easy on the first minute or so in the neighborhood. Then again, I live in a temperate climate so exercise good judgement and common sense and all will be well in the world.

I dont mean to scare anybody, but one of my good friend's dad works in shipping, and just so you know... the "lot" where these cars coming in from overseas sit is HUGGGGGGGGGGEEEEE! These cars are DOGGED comin off the boat containers... so don't kid yourself and think your car was never gunned and revved to hell and back... just KNOW it... those 3-4 miles you see on the car when you first purchase it... ;) Sorry to give you the truth, but there it is

i dont know if this is true for anyone else but when my car showed up at the dealer it had less than one mile on it, then they took it down the street to quick trip and filled it up with gas, when they got back they drove it to the back of the lot to wax and detail it and then drove it back up front for me, when i drove off in the car it had 3 miles on it, those were all put on by my dealer during the prep.

unfortunately he is correct, you have no idea what they do with your cars from the moment the car leaves the factory until you drive it home.

my car had about 18 miles on it. hmm... wonder where its been :?:

yeah that's interesting.. yeah and there's more than one port in which these cars come in at.. so there isn't just one lot.. plus you never did mention what port this friend's dad works at.. and if this is true.. he only can account for one lot, not the rest of them.. so why not tell us what port he works for and what shipping company this is.. i bet toyota would love to know about abuse of their merchandise..

so why don't you tell us what shipping company it is.. and what port and lot this is occuring.. that would be much better than just here say.. something we can prove.. since this is the internet and anyone can say anything.. just because they type it doesn't mean it's true.. so how about some facts? and well then that will be the truth

If your car comes in to the port of LA, its had a hard life already. First of all, the longshoremen who drive it off the ship and rough with them, then the people who take it from there to the toyota lot to get processed and port options installed. They drive them hard, redlining then, burn outs, the whole 9 yards. Why do i know that? i have many friends who are long shoremen and my brother worked for toyota one summer moving the cars from one lot to another. SpdLmtNA is right. I'm sure this goes with many other ports too. But this is LA, one of the biggest ports in the world, and this happens.

Default good to know... thanks!

im 22 yrs old and this is my first NEW car, others have been pre-owned. thanks for the tip! im sitting in my tc for like 2-4 mins warming it up (depending what i was doing, applying make-up, quick phone call...). i was just paranoid that its bad for the engine to take off before the temp hits the middle. my previous car was a 97 toyota camry. when i was warming that car up, i would be sitting in the car for at least 3 full minutes before i'd take off. good advice and tips! thanks guys!

i have no idea, but i really didn't like that it had that many miles. every brand new car should have nothing more than 10 miles. but oh well, nothing i can do about it.
