Default Engine noise/oil

Ok so the engine noise has been getting audibly louder and I can hear a ticking/tapping noise. When I first bought my car, that noise wasn't there, but for some reason it is there and loud now. Hmm. What to do. I took it to the dealer and they said they don't hear anything.

Also, after 3000 miles my oil change, the oil level has dropped a lot. As in it used to be in the middle and now the oil level is reading at low. Whats up. Anyone else burning oil?

I would suggest adding more oil if you havent already done so - if its all the way at low, your engine might not be lubricating everything it needs to.

Also, I think i have noticed the same increase in tapping and such since I got the car - I now have 1500 miles on it. I think its par for the course, and your engine is just getting broken in. The dealer probably isnt trying to dupe you - its just louder than when you bought it.

also another thing can someone post a sound clip of their engine with the hood closed and open and from the interior. Someone who has no mods. Maybe 15-20 secs at each part of the car. Thanks. I just want to compare engine noise.

Thats very odd that your engine is burning that much oil but you NEED to get oil into that car ASAP or else your going to mess it up even worse. Im not sure what else to tell you but your car is still under warranty so I would just take it to the dealership (if you trust your dealer) and have them take a look at it again. Tell them exactly whats been going on. Keep taking it back until they fix it (if the problem never goes away), and if they still wont help you after a few times look up the lemon law. You might be able to to use that on them if the dealer isn't willing to fix the problem.

I'd dump it out and try Penzoil Platinum 5W30. Might make all the problems go away. Who knows what cheap bulk junk your dealer is using... I doubt they'd shell out the $ for Toyota brand oil.

^^ I reccomend just about anything over penzoil, but that is your choice. I run Mobile 1 in everything I have.

How much oil did it use? ALL CARS BURN OIL!!!! Read the owners manual. even 1 qt in 1000 miles is not totally out of spec for some manufacturers. That is how the car lubricates. Mine uses about 1/2 - 3/4 qt between oil changes, which is perfectly normal.

Second, did they fill it up and call it done? Cause once you run the car for few minutes and the filter fills up your level will drop. I would say just drive it. If you arent consuming any more oil than a little over time, dont worry about it.

As far as noise, what weight of oil are you using? I have seen a lot of toyotas begin rattling if heavier weight oil is used. Switch back to 5W-30 and they are fine again. Also keep in mind that toyotas are not known for the quietest 4 bangers in the world. But it depends on what kind of noise it is making.

Ticking sound is probably coming from the top end, lifter or lash adjuster may be starved for oil due to your low oil condition. Have you noticed any drop in oil pressure? If you have, you may have a bearing or rod journal problem.

As far as oil consumption, 1 quart between oil changes is NOT normal, let alone per 1k miles.

Sorry, as in the other thread you are incorrect. It varies from car to car, but some oil consumption IS NORMAL.

It took me 5 minutes to find these:

You could also read the paperwork from Toyota on the car you are driving. Or talk to one of a million shops about this.

Again, mine has gone through approx 1/2 qt or so between changes since the day I bought it. My saturn goes through about 3/4qt between changes, and has for 170,000 miles.

Some cars are even worse about it. My dad has numerous customers with Fords or GMs that have burned close to 1 qt every 2 - 3k miles since the day they bought them, with nothing wrong, no increasing usage, etc.

Hell, I had a ford that burned that much its entire life. Never got any worse.

On a toyota I would be concerned if it hit 1 qt or more between oil changes, but 1/2 - 3/4 qt I wouldnt even blink at unless it got worse.

It's not normal on a tC but normal in a Mazda RX-8. A quart of oil for every thousand miles. Of course, older cars as well.

Yep, the rotarys are notorius for high oil consumption. Like I said, on a tC I would be fine with up to 1/2 - 3/4 qt between oil changes, and of course not increasing over time.

I would suggest making sure you moniter the noise from the engine bay though.. if it keeps getting louder and more profound, then I would take the car in and have the dealership check the bearings, and internals for something..

Lack of oil, or faulty oiling system within the engine is one of the possible causes for my engine malfunction, that along with suspected faulty bearings or improper clearances.

Rotarys inject oil into the motor to complete the seal from the rotor to the housing. And thats why they 'burn' oil. They are designed that way.

Engifineer, while I respect your opinions greatly on most matters here, I must respectfully *strongly* disagree with the above.
