Default Engine sound rougher when it's cold?

Could be just mine? But i've noticed when i wake up and leave for work in the morning.. for a few minutes while the engine is still cold, it sounds a bit rougher when accelerating.. there seems to be almost a chattering or ticking noise.. but it only lasts for a few minutes until the engine warms up.. then it goes away. just wondering if anyone else has noticed the same.. i'll tell them about it when i take it in to get my oil changed here coming up soon. thanks.

I haven't noticed anything but then again I drive incredibly slow until my engine is warm. I'm not sure what noise it is you're talking about so I'm not going to say everything's fine, but I would expect a cold engine to sound different from a warm engine. Engines are designed to operate differently when they're cold.

The engine does operate differently when it is cold. It fires the cylynders in a different order until it is warmed up. It is by design, stop being a typical tC owner. Cars make noises.

Yeah i noticed this too. Let the engine run for a minute and there is no problem.

It doesn't use a different firing order when it's cold. It simply richens the air/fuel mixture and raises the idle. It's the rich mixture that makes it run slightly rougher.
I always got out and start the car, go inside and have a cup of coffee and then leave. just five minutes or so is enough.

It's still a 4 banger. It doesn't like starting in cold just like every other engine. I even get a squauk outta my belt when it's 40 below.

when the engine is cold it operates in what is called open loop mode. in open loop mode the air fuel mixture is predetermined by the ECM and does not take readings from the emmission sensors. once it is warm it goes into , you guessed it, closed loop and begins actively adjusting a/f mixture according to all the sensors.

You'll actually get a miniscule performance boost in cold air.

But I doubt that's what you're noticing.

Cold air is not the same thing as a cold engine. Your performance will not be nearly as good until your engine hits its optimal temperature. Not to mention you shouldn't be driving a cold engine hard anyway unless you're looking for an excuse to do an early rebuild.

Most cars are rough in the cold when you first start them, they smooth out after about 30 minutes......

It got to -30F earlier this week. I accidentally left my iPod in the car - it's now dead.

I don't complain about tC problems - this car has ZERO PROBLEMS compared to the cars I drove before. I'm just curious - anybody when they rev get this "tss vroOOMmm" sound? I hear it when up against a wall. Mostly when its cold. What's that "tss" sound? (At risk of myself sounding like a moron)
