Default Fan Display Icon Always On?

I searched but couldn't find this info.

I just recently bought a 2006 TC. One thing I have recently noticed is that the Fan Icon is always on unless I have the window defogger on. I am talking about the display next to the clock that shows where the heat/AC is coming out. Let's say for instance I have it set to come by my feet; when I press the off button, the icon showing it is coming from that area is still displayed next to the time. The air/heat is off, but the icon won't go away. Is that normal/is there a way to get rid of it? I can only get rid of the icon if I turn on the defogger, but don't want to drive with the defogger always on. As soon as I shut off the defogger, it displays the icon again. It's not a huge deal, but I'd rather just the time displayed.

I searched the net, manual, and this site, but can't seem to find this.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

There isn't a way. Since that display is primarly for the HVAC controls, it's always going to tell you in some way where the air is going, either on the display or with a lighted button.

Hey, you beat me to this question. I got my '06 tC a little over a week ago. I'm always paranoid the heat is always on wasting my gas mileage due to that stupid little icon. It gives me chills sometimes.

As long as the air isn't always on I will stop caring. The air isn't always on.. RIGHT!?

why would having the heat on waste your gas? you do know that the car gets its heat from a heater core that engine coolant runs through, the heater core just sheds off excess heat.
correct me if wrong

Well I'm 100% positive that air conditioning ruins MPGs. So I figured that having the heat on would too.

just because the fan isnt blowing air doesnt mean its not being directed. if you dont have it on recirculate on, as you drive, just the motion of driving brings air through the car and distributes it as depicted on the display. dunno if other people noticed that.

a/c decreases you MPG's due to the fact that the motor has to run a HP hungry compressor, thus using more fuel to power it. Having heat on wont ruin your mpgs at any measurable level.

it still has to power fans to blow air into your car.

youll notice a huge change in idle if you turn your heat on.

it does decrease gas mileage

not all that much though, the fan is electric, so all it needs to do is power the alternator a little more

To answer your question.. i tried this, hit the off button and yes the icon will disappear! so i'm not sure why your icon stays there.. is this an 06 thing now?

to 06 owners, try hitting off on the hvac controls and see if the icon disappears..

if you just hit the down arrow a few times, the fan remains on the lowest setting. you have to actually hit off for it to go off

I have tried hitting the off button. I know if you lower the fan, the fan speed icon changes. When I hit off, the fan speed icon disappears, but the icon that shows where it would be coming out of will not go away unless I hit off and then turn on the windshield deffogger. Short of always leaving the defogger on, that icon will not go away. It is a 2006 TC. Can another 2006 TC owner confirm?

i have an 05 and the icon showing what position the air is set to go is not going to turn off. the fan speed icon however does turn off when you hit the off button and that shows how much air is comming out if any. is the fan display is off then the HVAC system is off.

thats how mine works at least.

By that rationale having your stereo or headlights on will decrease gas mileage too. Yes, technically speaking, any drain on the electrical system will decrease gas mileage, but the difference is pretty insignificant.

The reason it changes your idle noticeably is because the alternator isn't generating much electricity when the engine's only turning over at 800rpm or whatever. The ECU notices how much drain is on the electrical system and adjusts idle speed to compensate. Once you're actually driving, this becomes a moot point because the engine's revving high enough to offset any electrical drain.
