Default Figure Grill - Review

Take note these are only my opinions and what I think is right and wrong so take it all for what it's worth.

1) Gloss black really means "really" glossy black. Should have chosen "flat" but then again not sure how that looks in person. Hard to see the true colors from the e-bay site.

2) Next comes me not doing more reserach before jumping on the group buy bandwagon. "Zip ties" to attach. At my age and the number of cars I have modified this is just to ghetto for holding my grills on or any part for that matter. Except wires and lines.

3) Working with an OEM engineer on our own products I picked up a few things. For the factory grill you will notice that the honeycombs angle forward from back to front. This is so you can't see straight through them for a hidden look of what's behind. The Figure grill exposes all which is not appealing for my taste.

Conclusion the Figure grills may be fine for the money and a cheap mod but I'll keep searching for an RS 1.0 grill and send these back.

good to know...yeah i dont think attaching with zip ties is the way to go, and the word u used...ghetto...describes it perfectly in my mind!

and i dont like how it would expose the radiator and shizzel - RS1 grill FTW!

I had placed an order for the grill, but when I started reading the install manual on the e-bay auction and came across the zip ties deal I was discourage on that part, also is very true that you can see whats behind the grill, and one hour later I cancelled my order

I got the Figure Grillz....

Pros- They powder coat it, Makes front look More aggressive, Cleans up the
front of the car,
I have the Glossy Blk....Looks Tight!...
* did Not have to take bumper off either!

Cons- Does Not contour the OEM grill area that well, Had to Re-Bend it to fit
better!!...Zip-Ties are "ghetto" for attaching it, Needed to drill the
bumper, the Metal material looks like stuff from Home Depot!

All-n-All......not really worth the Price..glad I got it w/ the GB!!.....Like I said at least its Powder Coated so it looks shiny and will last a while!!...

i understand the concerns as well. i have the flat black figure grilles and during the install you definitely feel like zip ties are a cheap way to go. also, the angle of the grille looks like it will be an issue, but then you step back after it's installed and realize that they really do look damn good... you can't see the zip ties, and you can't see radiator... all you can see is one hot tc...

It seems like a nice grill has been one of the #1 requests for OEM parts forever and I'm still just floored that between Figure and Grillcraft, etc, nobody has a decent one. I know it's so tempting to just powdercoat some wire mesh and cut it to shape, but if someone could actually make one with the holes and mounting tabs to be a good replacement of the OEM, it couldn't possibly cost that much more. I'm still waiting, but i'd really like to get one! RS1 would be great, but it's worth maybe 200-300 max, not the 800 or so they sell it for.

yea, the grills are at least strong enough to be fixed easily. i hit a huge log and the grill got bent, but all i had to do was bend it back and it was fine.

i dont know about everybody else, but i got gloss black fig grills and they look great on my car, IMO. But i guess this is the same with everything else, everybody has their own take on the matter. here are some pics of my install:

When up close you dont see the zip ties and i have the air diversion panel so you cant look down and see them. you just have to take an extra 5 min or so to make sure their hidden and snipped as far back as possible. (BTW This pic is from before i took the extra 5 min. you can see one of the zipties. I was too excited to wait to take the picture.)

Just put my flat black set on before the weekend. Great fitment, easy install-- took maybe 30 minutes, even with the kids running around. With the hood closed (or is you have a radiator plate) you can't see through the mesh to the radiator. They're also the eensy zipties, so you can't see those either.

As to zipties being ghetto... the entire front fascias on both of our race cars are held on with zip ties. That way, when someone mauls into it, it just pops the zipties and saves the body panel.

I'd snap a pic, but it's more bug guts than anything right now.

to who asked, the zipties snapped and didnt rip through the bumper plastic. the plastic was cracked due to impact through.

My thoughts exactly! I would pay more for an OEM quality grill.

Expense depends. Molds can get very expensive. Grills are not my thing but this is what I would look into if they were.

I know that real quality costs, but c'mon - it's a slightly curved piece of plastic or fiberglass or CF or whatever. It has no moving parts, no real high tolerances, no electronics - it should be relatively easy. I'm just surprised that even if they're handmade, they don't have mounting tabs and trim rings. The Figure one is fairly close, but it's just bent and powder coated metal mesh - can't anyone do a little better? Someone could go into business buying the Figure grills and fabricating tabs and trim rings just to make them look cleaner.

I guess the big gaps on the bottom corners of the top grill bother me more.

You are comparing a race car to daily driven street cars. Two completely different applications. Nobody is going to convince me that a ziptied grill is okay on my daily driver. I can only imagine the comments if peoples OEM cars came this way.

Hard to say unless a grill was taken to a plastics company and qouted. Any part can be made but to keep prices per item down there would have to be considerable interest.

I can have our CAD engineer spec the OEM grill minus logo and chrome trim to get a qoute but there would have to be a high interest to even spend the time and money.
