Default Gas Guzzler...

There was a thread ealier in the year of the miles per gallon people get driving their TC's around... but after 3 months of filling up my baby, I've noticed that it doesn't seem to be as gas efficient as I thought it would be.

On average, I get 19 or 20 miles to the gallon... driving a combo of highway and backroads... Is this about right?

Coming from a Sentra (on average 33 mi/gallon) I guess I halfway expected a little more (maybe 24/25 mi/gallon)....

Any thoughts?

You should be getting 29-30 mpg on the highway depending on manual or auto. If you manual are you taking it high up in RPMS before you shift because your getting awful mileage.

Couple things, gas in the winter (here anyway) has 10% MTBE or other additives to make it run cleaner... And less efficient.

I've found that with the gearing the gas mileage drops pretty quickly the faster you go. If I do 70 I'll get upper 20s (27/2, and if I do 80 I'll get 23/24. Throw a couple bikes on the roof and I'm lucky to get 22. :-D

I have an auto. With a combo of highway and local driving, I got 25mpg and 26mpg for the last 2 times I actually kept track.

I am very soft on the gas pedal, meaning no crazy accelerating. And I drive 65-80mph on the highways.

65mph seems to be the best for the manual on the highway, 70mph isn't too awful bad. Much past that and you start to get around 3500rpm which starts to drink more gas. Redlining every shift will drink more gas also, so I'm not sure why you are getting so low. I think I saw one of the mags on a long term test complain about low mileage, but it could be a lot of driver style, if you let the car warm up without going anywhere, etc.

Assuming that you do not have a heavy foot and not obese, you should do a lot better than that. Do you keep a bunch of junk in the trunk? Do you carpool with a few person? My average is 27-30 MPG, 90% highway, 10% city. Highway average is 70 mph. I am babying this car though.

Hmm. 5-speed here, with 25.4mpg lifetime average (6K miles). I like speedy acceleration, but don't go past 75-80 on the highway. My commute to work is 2 miles, so I have a lot of short trips and very little highway.

Edit: I did a somewhat extreme break-in (besides following most of the manual's advice I did redline it before 1K, but I also changed oil several times before 1K). Maybe it helped, but I can easily get 31-32 on the highway.

I'm getting around 300 miles to the tank, which according to my calculations and how much I put in the tank comes out to around 24mpg. I live in downtown atlanta and do about 50/50 highway/city driving with occasional WOT

I haven't really calculated but on a 200-mile round trip (mostly I-95) to see my family in DE, I use 'bout 2/3 of a tank. I consider that pretty good considering there's probably still 2 gallons left after the needle hits 'E' (or 'R' in our case).

i consistently get 28-29 MPG with probably a 60/40 highway/city driving. On the highway i cruise about 80 and i usually drive fairly agressive. Lowest i have recorded was 24mpg which was very little highway

Yeah, the car really needs a 6th gear. I've been getting around 24 mpg driving 90% on the freeway. I shift at around 3k and don't really gun the car. In fact, most of the time I tend to baby it. However, I do cruise the freeway around 80mph. That sixth gear really would help! I hope as it breaks in it'll get better gas mileage.

Ever since I had my car I haven't gotten any better then 23 mpg. I've been getting 22-23 mpg on my auto. I drive about 50/50 city/highway. However sometimes I drive in traffic (about 25% of the 50 is in traffic).

Remind me to stay away from Orange County

8neways, I get about 27-29 mpg with mostly highway. It's been pretty consistent after 17,000 miles. I usually go about 70-85mph with no traffic to 15-45mph with traffic. And there is traffic.

wow... thanks for the insight..

Haha... i'm quite the opposite of obese and my trunk is empty... i usually don't warm up my car (though i've started to in the past week)... and usually drive alone...

i do drive fast... but haven't brought it over 105... and i live half a mile from work...

i did autocross my car about two weeks after i bought it... but that was a few months ago...

Does the KIND of gas matter?

Brand of gas? Possibly. Octane? Well, this has been beat to death and I'd say no, it won't matter except in the pocket book.

Supposidly winter gas gets less mpg than summer gas as well, if you live in an area that gets some cold weather where they add the winter additives.

Yea, it seems like the mileage I've been getting lately is a lot worse then it was when I first got the car. Maybe it's because I haven't driven it much lately. It sometimes sits in the garage a whole week without being used. Now that school's started again I can use it daily. We'll see.
