Default gas mileage

first off i love my Tc... .. .
but if i had a complaint it would be the gas mileage. . .is there a reason it isn't that good? i mean the new toyota avalon's 3,5 liter V6 that makes 280hp gets 22/ 31!?!?!!! thats basically the same as our I4's 160hp gas mileage... .. .am i missing something here?

Not sure how the Avalon gets that compared to ours but I believe it. Yes, mainly my only complaint about the car is horrible gas mileage. I think i'm averaging like 22 combined and i shift early. Makes me miss my civic more and more.

It all has to do with the type of gearing that the cars come with. When they get tested officially for mpg by epa or whoever does it, they probably favor cars with less aggresive low speed gear ratios.

I do alot of city driving and gas mileage has been alright. I get about 21 city/25 highway. I usually go through a full tank once every week, gas prices are rediculous now, 2.30 a gallon!

Just for some perspective the price for gas today is much less than it was in the '70's and 80's when adjusted for inflation.

i'm averaging 23, and I would consider myself to baby the tC, i usually dont push her above 2500rpm while accelerating. i think the reason for the poor gas is b/c of our more aggressive gearing.

You dont go above 2500rpm? Are you serious. Is it because you just dont want to waste any gas?

My average for the car for it's 5700 miles is about 17mpg, worst was around 12.8, with the best being around 20.7.

I take really short trips though (2miles per or so) and I do alot of spirited driving. My usual gas tank gets around 200 miles, and I fill up once a week.

Gearing plays a big factor. Also, it's a lot easier for a big engine like the avolon's to move the car, but if you start driving it spirited like a tC, you will get worse gas mileage.

My g/f get's about 23 mpg on mostly city driving, not to shabby because it's winter with warm-ups and such. I expect to see 24/26 mpg in the summer.

My Celica get's 30mpg city and about 34 hwy Fill up the 12.5 gallon tank every 12-14 days!

My gas milage has been great, when I drive conservatively.

Otherwise, you can see the needle dropping...

gearing makes a big difference. also, i've noticed with my last three cars, gas mileage sucks while you're breaking the engine in. my first tank on the tc gave me 13.2 with about 90% highway. i ticked over 7000 mi this morning, and i avg somewhere in the neighborhood of 24 to 26 doing about 40% city 60% highway driving.

just out of curiosity, what rpm range do you guys accelerate in...you know how high do you rev before u shift, or the auto does it for you. like I said usually accelerate at about 2500RPM, when i feel like having some fun though i let the rest of the ponies loose.

Mine averages around 27city, haven't noticed hwy i dont do much hwy driving ....and it could be i work 10 minutes away from work. So that could be it too. But when i averaged it, it comes out to be 27-28 i believe. That's about 3 weeks on one tank of gas, for me.
