Default Getting into 1st gear... sometimes a problem.

I have problems sometimes getting into 1st gear.
I had it today.
I disengaged the clutch completely, then pushed it back in.
Then it still wouldn't go into gear until I did it again.

This happens randomly, but today was the first time it didn't go in after a couple of seconds of trying.

No, this isn't the first manual I've driven. I've been driving for about 7 years, and every car I've had to date has been a manual. I'm no stranger to a gear box.

Any ideas?

yep ive had the same problems, its been discussed on here before, i dunno search some youll find it. I think it had something to do with your syncros.

i usually try pushing it in a few times then if that doesnt work, i go down to 2nd then up.

How fast are you going when you try to put it in? I heard that the car won't let you go into first if you're going above a certain speed. I'm not sure on this though.

yeah... if you're moving, the car won't let you shift into 1st as a safety thing at a certain speed... that's what i heard too.

but it sound's like you're having problems still while stationary? i have that issue sometimes too, but i just let go of the clutch and move it back in... normally works...

or when it's hard getting into reverse, i do that too... and sometimes i shift into 1st and then into reverse... which works too...

Yeah i have that issue as well. But that's because im still rolling to a stop and trying to put it in first...so i just put it in nuteral until im stopped then put it in first.

i haven't had trouble getting it into 1st, unless i'm going over 10mph, but i can understand that because it locks you out over 10mph.
sometimes it feels a little resistant to go into first, almost like i'm pushing something out of the way to get into gear, but it doesn't bother me
just start off in second from now on, haha

Yes, while stationary. I'm well aware that they are lock outs to keep you from destroying stuff.

I called Tejas Toyota (in Houston, Tx) today and the service guy I talked to said they hadn't had anyone come in about it.

Also, when I bring it up there for that, I have to get the stereo check out because it likes to randomly change channels.

And btw, the car is just about to hit 5k on the odo.

I have the exact same problem. I am completely stationary and not moving at all and then try to go into first and the sycro just won't mesh. It isn't all the time but probably 5-10% of the time. And at least half the time going into first I can really feel the sycros meshing. Shifting to second and back up does nothing I have to shift to third and then it will go into first smooth. Not sure what is causing the issue. Heck my 36 year old porsche with a broken syncro isn't this hard to get in gear.

starting in 2nd is hard on the clutch. 1st is to get you going so if you are already moving at like 5mph or something like that you can use 2nd.

Having two nautical blue cars having this problem doesn't mean much, as color doesn't mean anything. But obviously this seems to be a problem with '06 models

I'm going to Tejas tomorrow night and I'll talk to the service people then. Time for the 5k mile servicing.

Yea, reverse is the only one that sometimes doesn't want to catch. But I think it is like that on about any manual vehicle. All I have to do is put it in first and rock the car slightly, then it slides into reverse perfectly. Not being able to hit first is wierd.
