Default glass deflector panel = majorly flawed

It's been as high as 115 here in Phoenix this week.. yesterday evening it cooled off quicker than normal due to high winds. I got back from dinner around 8pm, and low and behold..the front deflector panel is sitting there shattered. No driving..nobody hititng it, it just exploded on its own.

Interesting eh? We are going to the dealer in a few minutes..obviously something that should be covered. I will let you guys know how this turns out.

I feel your pain.

I know that the dealership showed me an intrusion (i.e. a rock) mark, but at the same time it sucks that the glass is having this problem. I don't even know how to remedy it either, it's not like 3M stoneguard will keep it from happening. If anything it'll just hold the mess together.

Reck, sorry that happened!! Make sure you report this to NHTSA and let us know what the dealer says. Which dealer did you go to?
See http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr...ct/results.cfm

This is getting scary. I live in Phx too and I'm worried that the glass is going to shatter on me too. I love this car, especially the moonroof but I'm afraid it’s going to break on me while on the freeway.

atleast it didn't happen while you were driving... freak the ____ out of me when that happen out of nowhere.

and intresting enuff it appears you also have Flint Mica... maybe their possessed?

Really tho, you incident supports my theory of the HOTTNESS then going to cold, wether it be temperature outside or inside car with the AC. The HOT STATES, States in the south or nevada and arizona are the only ones having this problem.

Ok I like the idea of the two sunroofs in the car but I have a feelin toyota didnt really think this out worth a damn . I am not sayin they just slapped the sunroof into a car , In my opinion they should have just opted for the traditional sunroof design . I am wondering if the Audi A3 is gonna have similar probs with their "FULL SKY" sunroof that is designed very similar to ours . I dont really remember hearing any issues with the other sunroof designs (ie Celica , Corrola , Camry et etc) .

Wow! I haven't had this problem at all...at least not yet. I live in Georgia, it gets really hot down here and I have a habit of turning the A/C on as high as possible when I first get in the car. Maybe, I should reconsider and roll the windows down first and then turn the A/C on gradually. Anywho, that sucks that this happened to you, hopefully the dealership will take care of it quick.

they are actually pretty much identical. The guy at the dealership showed me the A3 when I went to pick my car up after they fixed the glass. He voiced a concern wandering the same thing.

maybe they should make reinforced glass with some sort of thin metal wire?

nah that'll make it uglee, hw about a 3 layered glass similar to windshields?

ideas on how to redesign the glass for the roof?

maybe just stronger glass. It will be heavier and weigh the car down a bit but it seems worth it.

It sucks athat this is happening. I've never seen a moonroof shatter on a car as much as these are. Actually, come to think of it, I've only seen one other car that this has ever happened to. Until now.

if you have car porch or garage park in there... when mine shattered, I was out of town for a day and the car sat outside underneath the sun all day. The day I got back in drove it, 20min down the road it shattered

If I remember correctly from high school chemistry, if glass is heated and then quickly cooled down it will shatter. This was a precaution when we were heating pyrex test tubes that needed to be washed afterwards. I've only see this happen while washing dishes though...which is why hot drinks shouldn't be served in a glass.
