Has anyone fixed the rattles on their tC's yet?

Since it seems like everyone has issues with their tCs rattling... has anyone found a way to eliminate these rattles, or at least some of them? From what I've read, the dealers dont really do much, so are there any "homemade" ways to fix them?

still trying to decide if I want to get a tC... the rattling is the only thing thats making me uneasy.

1tC2NV 06-28-2007 09:16 PM

I added 2 12" subs to my tC & I don't hear a sigle rattle... OR anything else for that matter!

theojh 06-28-2007 09:47 PM

what?

snarcher 06-28-2007 10:26 PM

gosh have you test driven one? its not like its got marracas hanging from the ceiling, its just some random bumps yo hit might make a little chirp in the back, which is easily fixable if anyone brings it to wa dealership

b_wet 06-28-2007 10:31 PM

dealerships have a bullitin on it. thats how i got mine fixed.

Yanki01 06-28-2007 11:10 PM

i found that its my rear passanger glass on top thats tapping something metal. I plan on taking it to the dealer next week to get it fixed. its making me crazy! its not just bumps, if your not on a smooth road, you'll hear it.

amdforever 06-28-2007 11:20 PM

I had the dealership clean the tracks on my sunroof since it got dusty out here and actually activated the jamprotection feature 5 times in one day...now I have a high pitch whistle noise when I'm doing 80 down the highway and the car is hot on the outside from the sun/heat. Like something expands during the day and allows wind to whistle in it, I have no clue where its comeing from other than its right over my head by the windshield...I think they f'ed something up. I know some people have been fixing a few squeaks with 3m foam single and double sided tape. Sounds like it works to me.

10PieceNuggets 06-29-2007 12:20 AM

I still dont know what people mean by rattles, maybe this was fixed on the 08 batches? I have yet to have any rattles on my car, knock on wood. *hopes I didnt just jinx myself*

redwing634 06-29-2007 12:52 AM

yea id be interested to know whether the 2008s have the rattles..

anyone have a 2008 tc that rattles?

theblue 06-29-2007 12:56 AM

my car has no rattles except for the radio door which i fixed with a few strips of tape, but my car is still pretty new-ish.

Kratos 06-29-2007 12:57 AM

when i dropped my headliner to suede it, i placed rubber weatherstripping from lowe's/home depot and under the plastic ribs and on the metal of the roof. That stopped 80% of the rattles. I installed secondskin and ensolite in the trunk and side panels and doors and that was mainly for the road noise, and stopped/muffled about 10% of the other rattles. The rest is from the sunroof creaking and suspension creaking. but it is alot quieter than how it was from the factory.

The windshield has an upper gasket that just pushes-in, you will have to remove it carefully and use black silicone or RTV to re-secure it. Good Luck!

Matt_Burgess 06-29-2007 01:26 AM

Has anyone had the hood rattle? The passenger side of the hood near the windshield. It drives me crazy! If you grab the corner of the hood and push and pull it, it makes a tapping metal sound.. Anyone?

Spect2K3 06-29-2007 02:14 AM

With my hatch rattle, they did the tsb and that did very little. They are actually ordering some sort of cushions for me to fix the hatch and will be installing em hopefully next week under warranty. I'll let ya know how it goes

paul34 06-29-2007 02:23 AM

First of all, there's no way any '08 owner can say with certainty that rattles have been "fixed." Most of my rattles didn't really start until after 5k...

Anyway, I've got:

2) Panel - dash (bubble, wave), door panel, headliner crease
3) Radio door squeak
4) Hatch glass rattle
5) Tire pressure system

Just from a sticky note on my desktop, thus the weird order. #5 isn't really "warranty" per se, just that they forgot to set it when I bought the car. I could do it myself... but ehh whatever.

Really, though, I don't hear the others 90% of the time. The radio squeak is what persists.

Anyway, I know I can fix it myself too... but anyway, the dealer says that for any "noise or squeak" they'll need to keep the car for a full day/overnight because it takes them a long time. So I said I'll come back later.

Oh, and I have to get some panels swapped out. The guy also said there were a few tCs that came in with the bubbles on the dash, too, so at least I'm not alone.

I also have this weird crease in the headliner, and the headliner is sort of not glued/tight at all in that area either. They told me "well, we could replace it now, but it might happen again due to the sun and stuff... or you can wait until right before the warranty runs out, then we can swap it out"

what do you all think? BS? Is it a good idea? Because if it is sort of a "wear" issue from the sun, then maybe what they're saying is a good idea.

But at the same time, if I come back 2 years later from now, they might just blame the wear on me.

a_german_named_hans 06-29-2007 02:27 AM

No Opening Sun Roof = No rattles for meee... Almost. Sometimes I get the radio door rattle but that's no problem to fix. Either Close the radio door or turn the music up. Also the little plastic handle piece attached to the shades on the roof liner tap something when they're open, been meaning to put some tape on them to suppress them.

Exact same thing for me. I used some foam tape along the inside and it stopped completely. No other rattles in the last two years.

ScottTc13 06-29-2007 06:17 PM

My sunroof was rattling, dealer fixed it. Also the plastic around the radio would rattle but I just put a little strip on foam insulation behind it and it's good to go.

vastano1 06-30-2007 06:06 AM

i live in ny, ima just drive myself crazy by trying to find where all the rattles are coming from and then tryin to fix it....for me i fix my rattles by turning up the radio

imagin 06-30-2007 06:11 AM

My problem i have is i have a ghost squeak from my dash. It picks which bumps it wants to squeak and it is about dead center in the dash. Its extreamly high pitched and just drives me INSANE!!! Ive had my car at the dealership several times about this and had it confirmed by the service writer, but they allways say we cant do anyhting about it. This last time they said well you can put up with it, i mean its alot of work tearing a dash out..... If i could put up with it, i wouldnt come up there so often for a ____ing squeak now would i..... Little noises i can tolerate. Blatent noises that should not occour, i CANT ____ING STAND!!!!

Spect2K3 07-01-2007 04:18 AM

^^ there is a fix for that somewhere around here. Put some mounting tape on the top of the back of the center console and it will eliminate it. The vent holes have mobility. Put some padding under the vent holes and you'll be set. The fix is around here somewhere

Yanki01 07-01-2007 05:04 AM

i might be saying bye to the tC if the dealership cant fix this crap. it sucks cause it makes me feel like im driving a cheap car (which i might be) i love the design and all but they really didnt give a sh*t when they were making this.

You should have fliped on them, I can't belive the dealers are that lazy and are unwilling to fix a problem. If it is under warranty you should keep bugging them untill they all know your name.

tC rattle fix

I had the same rattle/noise issues that everyone's been talking about. I took my tC three times into the dealership to get it fixed and each time, the failed to fix it. The last time I took it in, the Toyota service tech said he'd have to keep it for about a month and probably weld something in the structure of the car. I wasn't going for that so I came up with the only fix I can think of.

I sold the tC and bought and Audi A3. Now I'm motoring in a rattle and noise free car with a 200 hp turbo charged engine. Sure the A3 was a little more, but the quality is so much better than the tC. That'll probably be the last Toyota I ever buy.

Yanki01 07-15-2007 12:04 AM

have yet to take mine in yet. I need to soon!

Sgtfluffy16 07-15-2007 12:10 AM

just to inform you all its a car.. and a scion.. now i love mine dont get me wrong but everycar has noises and rattles.. i work for lexus and u dont even want me to go into what they come in and complain about.. and yes it is insane.. there is a TSB out for the sunroof makin rattles.. the fix requires the entire roof to come out.. and sunroof everything.. and by putting felt on everything i had it done at my work there is a lot of work involed but it makes some what of a change and yet i still hear noises.. now its not that loud anymore but i still hear them yes..

Yanki01 07-15-2007 06:28 AM

give me the spec tC roof, i dont use my sunroof anyways!

Yanki01 07-31-2007 03:59 AM

Finally took it to the dealer and they replaced the rear passanger glass. Also put some foam tape on around the edges and foam tape on the inside of the headliner next to the sunroof and all along the side. So far it seems to have worked. They say if it needs more padding let them know. I might take it in again to get some more. I also had the sidemarker light go out along with the a/c shaking the sh*t out of my car when its on. So far, all have been ok. I got it back around 6pm today. Ill drive it around for a week or so to see if i need to take it back.

captainlaziness 07-31-2007 04:24 AM

Jeez...they're just a bunch of squeeks and rattles. Yes they are annoying. But making 'em go away is simple if you do what I do.
I pretend that my girlfriend is in the passenger seat rambling on about how bad work was and the annoying new intern and what happened on "Rock of Love" and what colors she want to paint the bedroom.....and magically, all the squeeks and rattles turn into a soft white noise which is much easier to tune out.

lbjshaq2345 07-31-2007 05:12 AM

Turn the radio up, easy free fix ;P
it's nothing major really at least for me. except on bumpy roads mine doesn't rattle, and i can't hear it anyway

whorok305 07-31-2007 11:46 AM

Put on Toxicity trac num. 1-4 all you'll be set

BigMURR 07-31-2007 12:36 PM

my slight hatch rattle doesn't bug me much, the only one that did cause me to have two bald spots in each side of my head was the radio door thing which with time I fixed, but now I have a new noise that kills me...

my Alpine HU is rattling. The button/device that pops the face of the unit rattles constantly and is completely annoying. I don’t even know where to begin to fix that.

Yanki01 07-31-2007 12:46 PM

^^ buy my HU that i have for sale in my sig, same as yours without the rattling :)

BigMURR 07-31-2007 01:03 PM

yeah I would but I'm really short on cash untill school starts

BigMURR 07-31-2007 01:08 PM

that and I only paid 100 for it new...

ScionJim23 07-31-2007 02:14 PM

i've only fixed my hatch rattle for now. Basically it is the 3 tan interior trim pieces that go around the hatch. The plastic spines on the back of them rattle agains the metal frame that they clip to and rest against. You also need to place some type of adhesive rubber stripping in a few other locations (hatch rest point) which prevents the hatch from bouncing up and down.

reid 08-03-2007 09:16 PM

I've been in and out of the dealerships for the roof rattling problem as well. I've tried 3 times to let them fix it in which they've always failed. I pursued arbitration under their recommendation in which I lost. =( I took my car in again which they kept it for another 12 days during which they replaced the roof housing sub-assembly for the second time and fixed broken welds. It doesn't seem like just a cosmetic issue anymore. The rattles came back a day later. I'm now hiring an attorney. I hope it turns out better this time.

matt593tc 08-03-2007 09:28 PM

my sun roof rattels just at a idal. also anttime my rpm reach over 3000 somewhere in my driverside compartment i het a wicked vibarction rattel noise witch drived me nuts. I think it is somewhere around the gas pedel cause i tweaked it and it stoped for a day but now its back. so anytime i do over 70 the noise comes back.so if i cruse at 65 i'm good
