Default Has anyone had any reliability issues?

Has anyone ever had their tC fail to get them where they needed to go? I want to hear if anyone ever had their tC actually quit running due to electronic/mechanical failure, and they had to get a tow truck. If you had something like a transmission break while really thrashing the car, tell me about that.

I bought my Scion, my first new car ever, because I was tired working on my own cars. Twenty years ago I swore I'd never buy a new car and take such a horrible depreciation hit, but I'm at the point in my life where I just don't have the time, nor do I any longer enjoy working on my own automobiles (although I'd probably enjoy restoring an old Lamborghini).

Common net wisdom, research, and through my own experiences, it seemed like Honda and Toyota made the most reliable cars on earth. I chose the tC for obvious reasons (made by Toyota, styling, adequate performance, features, price).

I'm keeping my tC stock to have the best chances of the thing never quitting on me for the life of the coupe.

I've certainly never read about people have tCs die on them, but someone like StuGotti basically had teh bearings go ape____. and considering the car is barely two years old, most realiability issues would certainly be covered under warranty.

Even the engine starting to disintegrate though (like the con rod bearings going) doesn't shut the car down for a few hundred or few thousand miles.

I'm talking about stuff that stops you cold, like bad electrical connections, water pump blowing out, rod through the motor, axel broken, radiator popping, hoses popping, serpentine belt breakage, just won't start for unknown reason, etc., etc.

There haven't been any reliability issues so, any failures we hear about, will be isolated instances.

Enjoy your tC. You escaped the depreciation issue well.

Zero Reliability issues with my tC after over 10,000 miles.....................No one should be surprised anyway, it's not a Volkswagen, It's a real car!!!!

yeah no issues except what's been found already / radio door shaking but that's it. They hve a fix for that on here too. I had the recall done but that was cool. I drive in St. Louis and we get everything from super hot to snow to rain and that's just since Oct of 05 since I had the car. I love my car. I thought I broke it because I jumped from a dead stop but I didn't shift up before it redlined. It stayed at 4k even though I shifted all the way up to 5th. It finally sinked back up about 3 blocks later. I took it into the dealer about a month ago and they said everything was cool and I haven't had any more of that happening and I get on it a lot.. toyota's are well built cars and quality is proven. Oh and my was something I did but i heard of one other guy who said his just did that without him trying. However, like someone stated above it was probably just an solated instances.

probably gotta wait 10 years to hear of stuff failing and then it would be 'normal wear and tear' like radiators blowing and the like (just changed a radiator on a 96 celica, top cap blew). but after that long and all that heat nothing lasts forever.

i figure the engine will last me a long long time. i see the clutch going first if anything, then maybe having to replace a synchonizer or 2. i don't beat on the car at all, but i just don't fully trust the tranny.

put it this way, toyota engines are known for long life. i figure that if anything is going to happen, the computer will let me know. if something crazy happens, it might be a fluke. if it happens to a lot of tCs, i would be very surprised.

some people have 25000+ miles on theyre tCs already and report nothing wrong happening, other than a couple of typical squeaks and rattles that aren't related to the engine/drive train

I have so many reliability issues..... my Focus breaks down everyday. Just kidding I don't actually have a Ford. The tC is obviously Toyota made so it shouldn't be a surprise when we're still cruising along with 150-200,000 miles on our cars. My dad has a Geo Prizm from 1990? and the ORIGINAL Toyota engine has 225,000 miles on it while the American made body is ready to fall off due to rust etc...That says a lot for Toyota's build quality.

22,000 miles and no problems yet. But then this car has the Camry engine which has been one of the most reliable engines.....

No reliability issues, the car fires up every time I turn the key. Probably the closest it has ever come to not wanting to start was when it was -20 outside and it cranked a little slow. It still fired up though. Great car.

I hope some of the SC folks check in here. I'd LOVE to get a SuperCharger, but I'd rather have an engine that will last me 200,000+ miles than more power.

well they probably didn't overbuild it that much to be supercharged for 200k+ miles but if they can put it under the extended warranty then that says a lot.

Yeah most people say the way the did the supercharger was more for fun then power. They also cover for the life of your regular warranty so yeah you will probably have 200,000 with the supercharger. It's not a beast on the motor just more fun.

My transmission has not been great. At 3000 miles fall/winter started to roll around and any days on <40 degree weather, it is very very rough shifting for the first 10 mins or so, feels like theres molasses instead of tranny oil. Grinds slightly in 2nd and 3rd no matter what unless I double clutch early in morning on cold weather days.

Dealer said nothing was wrong when they kept it overnite n test drove it in the morning( was like 55 degrees out, bad luck on my part).

Now I think my shift fork or something is screwey. Rough going into first at a stop (but not if im clutch-down in 2nd and move to first while stopped), and not wanting to go into 4th from a 5->4 downshift. It should be noted that I dont race the car, ive launched it once total ever, and Ive never smelled clutch =P

Yablargo, have you tried switching to Redline MT-90 in the transmission?
