Hatch Rattle & Audio Cover problems solved!!
I just got back from the dealer. The problems with my TC have been solved.
1-Hatch Rattle Problem--The loud hollow sounding rattle was coming from the latching mechanism on the hatch. It was rattling against the latch striker. They put some kind of insulation on the striker. The rattle is gone. I drove around for 20 miles mainly on local bumpy roads to test it out. The rattle is gone!
2- Audio Cover Won't Open-- There was felt on the Hinge Pin causing the difficulty in opening the cover. The felt strip was removed. The cover now opens with ease. I tried it about 10 times. It opens on the first push each time. The dealer said that Scion had just issued a TSB on this one. I don't know why felt was there in the first place. Maybe to keep the cover from rattling?? I listened for rattle from the cover...and there is no rattle..

that's great they fixed the problem..
can you post pics of the locking mechanism or the area where they put the insulation?
or can you describe better where the insulation is? i have that too and it would help if i could do it myself..
yeah i had the audio cover hanging up and rattling.. had to get it replaced but thinking the newer part didn't have the felt.. doesn't make any noise now either, opens most every try..
let us know..

After you lift up the hatch, look down-right in the middle there is a rectangular opening. Inside this opening, there is a small bar called a striker. You could feel the bar by putting your finger inside the opening. (The opening is partially covered with rubber). The latch on the hatch grabs onto this bar when the hatch is closed. The dealer placed the insulation around this bar

I have had my tc for about a month now and from day one I had a rattle coming from the right rear corner of my hatch. My friend went back there when I was driving and he said it was because the whole hatch was bouncing up and down. It seemed like when he pushed it up a little bit it stopped. It also seems like the harder I close it the more it rattles. It sounded like one of those shock towers was either loose or it was banging on something. Anyways, I took it in to the dealership and they took a look at it. It took about an hour and a half . They drove it about 3 miles and determined that it was the shock tower mount. They "fixed" it by tightening the shock tower bolts. The dealership said it was loose and they said they turned the bolts like 3 times! I drove away with no rattles. When I opened the hatch and closed it again, the rattle started again. Im not sure what to do now. I don't know where it is coming from, the shock mount or the latch. I was thinking of trying to adjust the metal bumper on the side of the hatch down to push up harder on the hatch. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i spoke with the technician at scion about this too, since i hear this rattle from the hatch moving around.. he told me the bumper stops cannot be adjusted.. i was thinking that i could put some foam tape on the bumper stops and that should take care of the space.. he agreed.. so when i get around to doing that I'll let everyone know how it works out..
but thought i'd post it, since the j_bomb wanted some other ideas.. so yeah that was my idea.. sounds like you were thinking the same thing..

well update
i fixed the rattle in the hatch!! (insert applause)..
I posted to another person's question over in the maintenance and car care section but I'll post what I said here too..
I applied foam tape (1/4") to the bolted in bumper stops on either side of the hatch.. The tape is applied to the horizontal surface of the bumper stop contact spot.. About one inch long of foam tape.. and that's it! No more noise from the bumper bouncing.. Might want to try that and see if it removes the problem, simple fix! no need to go to the dealer for this.. Let us know! It's great something simple to fix it..

I am going to have my dealership look at that problem too. Mine closes fine but wont open after that HA! takes like 10 times to push and open, then the radio turns on and i am like AHHH NOO!! and i can't turn it off because i cant get the hood open! so i will let them know because i would like to use it HA! i mean it's there HA!
so you're talking the radio door scoobyroo2002? my pics were going to be of the hatchback bumper stops..
the radio door, chances are they'll order you a new console.. or door.. that fixed my problem..

O yeah opps HA! sorry yes readio door. Totally sucks i can't use it beacuse it get's stuck HA! i will complain about that when i take it in for my Idiling problem! that problem sucks real bad too!
yeah i just replied to your idling problem.. but the door should be replaced then.. i had the entire console replaced (they scratched the console).. and got a new door with it.. very easy to open now, unlike the first one.. so yeah that would do the trick
i'll post to this thread tomorrow with pics of the hatch foam tape fix..
